The Hinterautal-Vomper chain , also known as the Karwendel main chain , is the longest mountain range in the Karwendel . It carries numerous peaks with heights over 2500  m , including the highest peak of the Karwendel, the Birkkarspitze ( 2749  m above sea level ), and its neighbors, the three Ödkarspitzen . While the main chain in the western part sends long ridges to the south and north, between which typical Karwendel kare are embedded, in the eastern part to the north it shows an almost 1000  m high rock wall of great unity, most impressively in the Laliderer Wall . The main chain is divided into the western part - the Hinterautalkette - and the eastern part - the Vomperkette - and runs through the Karwendel from Scharnitz in the west to the town of Vomp in the east.

To the north of the Hinterautal-Vomper chain is the Northern Karwendel chain , to the south the Gleirsch-Halltal chain , which also shows the steep northern slopes typical of the four Karwendel chains, often hundreds of meters vertically, in large sections.

The western part of the Hinterautal-Vomper chain is criss-crossed by a difficult, high-alpine high path, which is called the Toni-Gaugg high path after its developer . It allows you to cross the Hinterau valley from the Pleisenhütte to the Karwendelhaus .

In the Northern Limestone Alps , to which the Karwendel belongs, there are a number of small and tiny glaciers . The only glacier in the Karwendel is located in the Hinterautal-Vomper chain to the north below the Eiskarlspitze in the Eiskarln .
