Marlene Schmidt
Marlene Schmidt (born September 7, 1934 in Breslau ) is a former beauty queen , actress , screenwriter and film producer .
youth
She was born in Silesia and grew up in Mulmke, a district of Heudeber in the Prussian province of Saxony , which became part of the GDR in 1949 . In Jena she studied at an engineering school and became an engineer for precision engineering . In 1960 she and her mother fled to West Germany via East Berlin . She first lived with her mother in Hattingen and then moved to Stuttgart . There she worked in a company for pneumatic measuring devices .
Beauty queen
In 1961 she applied for a preliminary round of the Miss Germany election because there was “a nice car to win”. As a representative of Baden-Württemberg , she was finally elected Miss Germany in Baden-Baden . On July 15 of the same year, she beat 47 competitors from all over the world in an event organized by Paramount Studios in Miami Beach and was named Miss Universe . The 1.73 m tall blonde has remained the only German Miss Universe to this day. After her election she was received by Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan , among others . Her mother Charlotte only found out about her daughter's victory through Werner Höfer .
At that time there were no beauty contests in the GDR. The FDJ -Zentralorgan Junge Welt denounced at the time that the report was exploited on competition both in the United States in order to draw attention to the German-German refugee problem.
Private life
In 1962 she became the third wife of the American television star Ty Hardin , who had gained fame through the title role in the western series Bronco . She settled in the United States, where Marlene Schmidt became the mother of a daughter. The marriage ended in 1966.
In 1969 she was interviewed by Erika Runge for the report book Women .
In the 1970s and 1980s she was married to the American film producer and film director Howard Avedis , with whom she ran a film production company for trash films .
Finally Marlene Schmidt moved back to Germany, where she settled in Saarbrücken . For a while she worked there in an electric motor factory and later married a teacher. This marriage has since been divorced and remained childless.
Film career
Between 1972 and 1986, Marlene Schmidt worked in the film business, as an actress, producer and author in eleven productions for the company that she ran with her second husband. Her main activity was in production and acting. The films belong to the B-movie in the lower category, most of them exploitation films . The first work from 1972, The Stepmother , which received an Oscar nomination - for film music, deserves special mention .
