biography

Early life

The New York native's mother divorced when he was five and took him to Texas , where he was nicknamed “Ty” for allegedly being as wild as a typhoon . In the early 1950s he joined the US Air Force , became a pilot, took part in the Korean War and was briefly stationed in Germany . A good athlete, he received an athletic scholarship after retiring from the Air Force and also played under the legendary football coach Bear Bryant at Texas A&M University . After graduating, he worked as an engineer at Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica , California .

Acting career

In his spare time he took part in amateur drama groups. From 1958, the 1.88 meter tall beau took part in minor roles in insignificant film productions. He completed his roles under the name Ty Hungerford , but his name was mostly not mentioned in the opening or closing credits of the films.

He got his first major role when Clint Walker , who played the title character Cheyenne Bodie in the popular western television series Cheyenne , asked for a higher fee , but Warner Bros. declined. Since Walker initially did not sign for further episodes, Hardin, so to speak, represented him as Bronco Layne in the following episodes of the series. Walker, under pressure, signed a new contract. The role of Bronco Layne had become so popular with the audience that a separate series called Bronco was created for her . As a result, both series alternated on Tuesday evening on a weekly basis. Ty Hungerford was given the stage name Hardin based on the real gunslinger John Wesley Hardin .

In April 1962, after 68 episodes, the series was discontinued. Ty Hardin turned back to feature films. However, he did not succeed in participating in first-class productions. The only exception was his participation in the well-cast film The Final Battle , where he was seen at the side of Henry Fonda , Telly Savalas and Charles Bronson . He played the villain Lieutenant Schumacher, who tried to undermine the Allies with sabotage methods. In 1968 Hardin played the main role of Moss Andrews in the television series SOS - Charter Boat , the 26 episodes of which were filmed in Australia and which also became very popular in Germany. From the 1970s, the acting offers for Hardin decreased significantly. He last appeared in front of the camera in 2011 for the comedy Head Over Spurs in Love .

politics

In the 1970s, he briefly made a name for himself as an evangelistic salvation preacher and then became the leader of the Arizona Patriots , an anti-Semitic organization rigid with arms . When Hardin got into trouble with the tax authorities in the middle of the decade, he founded the Common Law Institute , which among other things published a "Patriot Handbook". In 1986 the FBI raided the organization and confiscated a significant collection of weapons and various publications from the Aryan Nations , which also represent anti-Semitic and racist positions. Hardin then left Arizona and in the meantime moved to Washington State .

Private

While filming SOS - charter boat , he decided to stay in Sydney with his fourth wife, "Fay" . He opened a motorcycle shop in the suburb of Brookvale. He then spent several years in Europe before returning to the USA.

Hardin entered into a total of eight marriages, most recently in August 2007, and became a father ten times. From 1962 to 1966 he was married to Marlene Schmidt , who also became Miss Universe in 1961, in third marriage ; with her he had a daughter. Hardin's seventh wife, Judy McNeill, also moved in public from 1978 to 2007. In the 1960s, she was a photo model for Maybelline cosmetic products. Later she was also the model for swimsuits based on Oleg Cassini's creations . With her, Hardin has three children, three stepchildren and seven grandchildren.

After his last marriage, he lived in Huntington Beach, California, where he played golf and wrote his memoirs .
