Marlies Wanjura (born January 7, 1945 in Berlin ) was the district mayor of the Reinickendorf district of Berlin between 1995 and 2009 . She is a member of the CDU and was deputy state chairman of her party until 2009 as well as the local chairman of the CDU local association Lübars - Waidmannslust .

Family, education and work

Marlies Wanjura grew up in the Reinickendorf district of Frohnau . She graduated from school in 1961 with a secondary school leaving certificate . She trained as a nurse at the Rudolf-Virchow-Hospital in Berlin-Wedding (today Campus Virchow-Klinikum der Berliner Charité ), where she also worked professionally after completing her training. After her marriage in 1967 and the birth of two sons, she interrupted her professional and political work for the benefit of her family for almost ten years. Even so, she continued to do various volunteer work.

In the mid-1970s, Wanjura returned to work and worked in the social care service of a Berlin company, where she was elected to the works council. In 1979 she switched to Berlin's Caritas as a training officer . From 1980 to 1982 she worked in the same position at the Malteser Aid Service and was involved in the development and expansion of the Berlin social stations .

On April 8, 2011 she was elected President of the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) in the Berlin State Association.

Political activity

Between 1984 and 1990 Wanjura held her first public office in the Senate Department for Health and Social Affairs. At the beginning of 1991 she became a member of the Berlin House of Representatives , from which she left after just one month when she became City Councilor for Health and Environmental Protection at the Reinickendorf District Office in Berlin. Another year later, she was elected deputy district mayor. From 1995 to 2009 she was the district mayor of Reinickendorf. During her tenure, the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry honored the district as “the most business-friendly district in Berlin”.

In July 2007, Wanjura rejected the decision of the Reinickendorf District Assembly to hoist the rainbow flag in connection with Christopher Street Day every year during Pride Week in front of Reinickendorf Town Hall , asking what one would do "when the NPD came and a flag may hoist ". The Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany (LSVD) then demanded her resignation. A broad majority alliance consisting of the SPD , Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , FDP and the Grays in Reinickendorf increased the pressure on the mayor, the anti-violence project Maneo protested the refusal with a kiss-in .

Wanjura's responsibility for a feasibility study in the course of a public-private partnership for the management of school buildings, for the calculation of which the schools in real need of renovation were not selected, is controversial .

Because in another case the preparations for the construction of the Tegeler Borsighafen were not supposed to comply with the rules of the Berlin state budget, the Berlin public prosecutor initiated an investigation against Wanjura, which it discontinued in spring 2008 due to insufficient suspicion. The Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development also confirmed to Wanjura that the services had been awarded “properly in accordance with the applicable procurement law in compliance with the state budget”.

In a third case, Wanjura is said to have taken on the district's obligation in a letter of intent to secure the loading of heavy loads in the Borsighafen by the end of 2008, even though the budget and legal authorities had warned against this transaction. Only afterwards did Wanjura inform the audit office, although failure to comply would result in high claims for damages in the district. In 2009 she resigned as district mayor for health reasons a few months before her retirement.

Wanjura successfully defended herself against a disciplinary order issued against her in December 2008 because of the allegations and a related fine before the Berlin Administrative Court . The disciplinary body stated that Wanjura's misconduct was "neither obvious nor undisputed"; in addition, no distinction was made between personal and possible political responsibility in the disciplinary measure.
