Fundraising

Martin Aufmuth started the Internet project “BallonMillion” in June 2007 with the motto “10,000 balloons for a fairer world” and the aim of collecting donations amounting to one million euros for the benefit of the organization Das Hunger Projekt . The goal was not achieved, but by 2013 a total of 552,550 euros in donations were collected. This financed two development centers in Malawi and Mozambique , each of which can improve the situation of around 30,000 people. The campaign was under the patronage of Renate Schmidt . Numerous celebrities gave encouragement and support, including the politicians Richard von Weizsäcker , Angela Merkel , Horst Köhler and Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul .

In retrospect, Aufmuth sees the fundraising as a decisive step for himself: “In the end, we only raised half a million. But I noticed that I can make a difference. That was a key experience for me. "

Climate protection project

In 2009 Aufmuth initiated the co 2 maus project , with which pupils were motivated in a playful way to be interested in climate protection and to save CO 2 themselves . According to Aufmuth, by the end of the project in 2013, a total of 45,000 children and young people along with their siblings, parents and teachers had taken part and saved more than 40,000 tons of CO 2 . The action received several awards.

Providing poor people in developing countries with glasses

The machine developed by Martin Aufmuth for manufacturing eyeglass frames from solid steel wire. The 30 × 30 cm worktop is integrated into the lid of the tool box so that the manufacturers in the target countries can produce glasses at any location.

In June 2012 Aufmuth founded the EinDollarGrille eV association , which is active in eight countries (as of 2017). With the OneDollarGlasses, Aufmuth wants to help people in developing countries who need glasses and cannot otherwise afford them. The material for glasses costs about a dollar; the glasses sell for a few dollars. The glasses enable people with ametropia to attend school or to do work that requires good eyesight, for example.

For the production of OneDollarGlasses, Aufmuth developed a bending machine that, together with other tools, fits into a wooden box with the dimensions 30 × 30 × 30 cm. The bending machine enables simple glasses frames to be made by hand from sturdy wire. The lenses are manufactured in a partner company in China and are made of break-proof polycarbonate with a hardened, scratch-resistant surface. After an eye test , the optician selects the right glasses from an assortment with 25 different lens thicknesses from –6 to +6 diopters . Since 2016 glasses with –10 to +8 diopters have even been supplied.
