He is Professor of Ecotoxicology and Isotope Use and was Rector at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna from 2010 to 2018 . Since July 2019 he has been President of the Christian Doppler Research Association .
Life
Gerzabek studied agriculture / plant production at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, was awarded a Dipl.-Ing. graduated and in 1987 on the basis of his dissertation (The Plant Availability of Magnesium) as Dr. PhD in soil culture (Dr. nat. techn.). From 1984 to 1993 Gerzabek worked as a research assistant at the Research Center Seibersdorf (today AIT , Austrian Institute of Technology) at the Institute for Agriculture as head of the soil research group. After completing his habilitation in the field of soil science at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna on the basis of his work on pollutant behavior in the soil, he was entrusted with the management of the agricultural research area at AIT. From 1997 to 2003 he then headed the environmental research department. In 2001 he was offered the newly created chair for environmental toxicology and isotope application at the Institute for Soil Research, Department of Forest and Soil Sciences at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. From 2003 to 2010 Gerzabek worked as Vice Rector for Research, from 2009 to 2010 as Managing Rector and finally from 2010 to 2018 as Rector of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna .
He has been the founding president of the Network of Life Science Universities in Central and Southeastern Europe (ICA-CASEE) since 2010 and was Vice President of ICA (European Association of Life Science Universities) from 2010–2016; In 2011 he was Vice President of the Danube Rectors' Conference and in 2012 its President. He is a member of the board of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS), of which he was chairman from 2009 to 2010. In 2009 Gerzabek was appointed to the Austrian Academy of Sciences as a corresponding member of the math and science class . Also since 2009 he has been Vice President of the ÖVAF (Austrian Association for Agricultural, Life and Environmental Research). Gerzabek has received numerous awards for his scientific work, for example in 2004 with the “Pro Merito” award in gold for special services to radiation protection, in 2006 by being awarded honorary membership of the Austrian Soil Science Society for outstanding services to soil science in Austria and in 2011 with the Emil Ramann Medal of the German Soil Science Society . In 2015 he was elected to the Academia Europaea and the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). Gerzabek has been an Honorary Member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) since 2016 . He has multiple honorary doctorates from Central and Eastern European agricultural universities ( Dr. hc mult. , See section Honors and Awards).
In June 2017 Hubert Hasenauer was elected Rector of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna , and on February 1, 2018 he succeeded Martin Gerzabek in this function. On July 1, 2019, Gerzabek succeeded the physicist Reinhart Kögerler as President of the Christian Doppler Research Association (CDG).
