Martin Hermannsson (born September 16, 1994 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic basketball player . Martin Hermannsson and his home club Knattspyrnufélag (KR) from his hometown won the Icelandic men's championship twice in 2011 and 2014, the first of which in connection with the cup victory as a double . After Martin Hermannsson was named the best young player and best local player in the Icelandic league at the last championship in 2014, he went to the United States to study at Long Island University . After two years he returned to Europe as a professional and played in the second highest French league LNB Pro B for the old master Étoile de Charleville-Mézières. After he was chosen here in the vote for the MVP of this division behind Zachery Peacock as second in the All-Star Team of the five best players, he moved like his national team-mate Haukur Pálsson one division higher to the Pro A at Champagne Châlons Reims .

Career

Martin Hermannsson moved up early in the men's team of his home club Knattspyrnufélag (KR) and already played in the top division Úrvalsdeild as a 15-year-old . At the age of 17 he not only won the Icelandic basketball cup, but also the double at the end of the season by winning the championship in the team led by Pavel Ermolinskij , who returned from abroad . In the following two years, in which Ermolinskij played in Sweden , KR could no longer intervene directly in the fight for the title and was eliminated in the semifinals for the championship. After Pavel Ermolinskij returned to KR, they reached the play-off finals again, defeating defending champion UMF Grindavík in four games after only one defeat . Instead of Pavel Ermolinskij as three years earlier, however, Martin Hermannsson, who had made his debut in the men's national team a year earlier , was named the best local player of the season as well as the best local player of the season as well as the MVP of the play-offs. Martin Hermannsson then went to the motherland of basketball to study at Long Island University Brooklyn Campus in the United States , whose college team Blackbirds plays in the NCAA's Northeast Conference (NEC) . The Blackbirds , who had won the NEC championship three times in a row between 2011 and 2013, failed twice early in the NEC championship tournament and, with a negative season record in 2015 and a balanced record in 2016, had no chance of reaching the national NCAA finals .

In the past, the Icelandic national team had only participated in smaller final tournaments such as that of the so-called Division C of FIBA Europe and the games of the small states of Europe . On his national team debut, Martin Hermannsson won a bronze medal in Luxembourg in 2013 in the latter competition and a silver medal two years later in his hometown. In the summer of 2014, the selection in the European Championship qualification was able to prevail somewhat surprisingly against the British national basketball team and qualify for the first time for a FIBA finals of the best European national teams. At the European Championship finals even a year later in 2015, the national team played their first ever final game in the Berlin Mercedes-Benz Arena against host Germany , which was just lost at 65:71. There was also no victory in the following four preliminary round games, with the Turkish national basketball team needing extra time to defeat the Icelanders 111: 102. After the early elimination at the premiere, the Icelandic selection was able to qualify again in the European Championship qualifying summer 2016 , when they prevailed against Cyprus and the Swiss national team , whose only qualifying victory was against the Icelanders. After the European Championship qualifier in 2016 returned Martin Hemm no longer in the United States back but stayed in Europe to a professional career in the French second division LNB Pro B to start.

Martin Hermannsson signed a contract for the 2016/17 season in Charleville-Mézières on the south-western edge of the Ardennes with the old master Étoile , whose championships came from the end of the 1950s before the city and club merger. It was only in 2004 that the club managed to return to the highest national leagues, where it has since been commuting between the highest amateur class NM1 and the second league Pro B. With Martin Hermannsson succeeded in fifth place in the regular season, the highest placement since returning to the national league, although they remained in the play-offs for the remaining promotion place in the top division without a win and were eliminated in the first round. The professional rookie , who had already become the player of the game on the 26th match day based on his effectiveness , received the second most votes after the end of the season in the vote on the MVP of the Pro B season and was among the five best players in the All-Star Team of Pro B elected. Like his compatriot Haukur Pálsson , who was two years older than him, and who had even missed the promotion play-offs with first division relegated Rouen Métropole Basket , Martin Hermannsson then received a contract in the top division LNB Pro A and moved from the border region "inland" to CCRB to champagne . Before that, however, the two Icelanders are trying to win the first finals for the Icelandic selection at the 2017 European Championship .

In June 2018 Hermannsson signed a two-year contract with Alba Berlin .
