Martin Schian

Martin Albert Ernst Richard Schian (born  August 10, 1869 in Liegnitz ; †  July 11, 1944 in Breslau ) was a German Protestant theologian and professor . He was also a former member of the Landtag of the People's State of Hesse in the Weimar Republic .

Life

Martin Schian was the son of pastor Robert Schian and his wife Marie nee Merensky. In 1893 he married Lincke, born in Breslau, Wally. He studied Protestant theology in Greifswald , Breslau and Halle .

From 1896 Schian was pastor in Dalkau ( district of Glogau , Polish : Głogów ), in 1902 in Görlitz and in 1906 in Breslau, where he also taught as a private lecturer in practical theology at the university . In 1908 he became a full professor at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . In 1924 he took over the office of general superintendent for the district of Liegnitz . In 1928 he became an honorary professor at the University of Breslau. In a letter dated June 24, 1933, August Jäger , Prussian State Commissioner for the Protestant regional churches, put him on leave with immediate effect.

On July 1, 1933, Schian wrote: “However, my conscience commands me to inform you, dear State Commissioner, that I cannot regard this leave of absence as legally valid. As a competent theologian, I know the church constitution of the Old Prussian Union and the rights given to it by the Reich constitution and guaranteed by the Reich Chancellor to know that there is no legal title on which this act can be based. "

From 1900 to 1927 Schian was chairman of the Association for Silesian Church History.

Martin Schian was a member of the DVP . From 1921 to 1924 he was a member of the Hessian state parliament for his party. His successor in the state parliament was Wilhelm August Dollinger .
