Martin Schneider (born November 24, 1968 in Schweinfurt ) is a former German soccer player who played 379 Bundesliga games for 1. FC Nürnberg , Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg from 1987 to 2000 .

Career as a player

societies

Schneider began his career at the DJK Schweinfurt. As a 15-year-old, he was appointed to a DFB youth team for the first time and moved to FC Bayern Munich. At the age of eighteen he signed his first professional contract with 1. FC Nürnberg and was immediately a regular player in the Bundesliga. The FCN team with Andy Köpke , Stefan Reuter , Roland Grahammer and Dieter Eckstein took a UEFA Cup place at the end of the season. In his first professional season, Schneider confirmed his great talent and the kicker nominated him in the ranking of German football in the field of “Defensive Midfield” in the category “In the wider circle”. From 1990 to 1999 he played for Borussia Mönchengladbach for nine years . As a hard-working worker, he mostly acted inconspicuously in the defensive midfield and was almost always a regular player. He had a good technique and an excellent understanding of the game, was strong, but not quick and not dangerous, which is why the big breakthrough was denied him. His greatest success was winning the DFB Cup with Gladbach in 1995 , but he only sat on the bench in the final. After the relegation of Borussia, he moved to league rivals MSV Duisburg , with whom he also relegated in 1999/2000 . Shortly before the end of the season, he tore a cruciate ligament and after a long break he was unable to build on his old performance. When his contract in Duisburg ran out, he moved to his hometown Schweinfurt for the second division FC 05 for the 2001/02 season . For him, he only played seven games before filing an application for sports disability. In the following season he was active as a player-coach for a few months at the Bayern league club TSV Gerbrunn .

National team

Schneider went through all youth national teams of the DFB. 1983/84 he was active seven times for the U-15 national team . For the U-16 national team he played ten times, for the first time on October 10, 1984 in Eskilstuna in a 0-0 draw against Sweden. In the summer of 1985 he took part in the U-16 World Cup in China with his class. From October 1985 he was used as a younger player nine times in the older age group in the U-18 national team and scored a goal in the 3-1 victory over Denmark on November 13, 1985 in Flensburg (European Championship qualification). With the one year older players (including Andreas Möller , Oliver Bierhoff , Jürgen Luginger ) he played at the Granatkin tournament in Leningrad and a tournament in Qatar. In the fall of 1986 he played three more times in the U-18 of the DFB. In the games with his fellow players of the same age ( Detlev Dammeier , Marcel Witeczek , Dirk Konerding ) he scored another goal. At the U-20 World Cup in Chile in 1987 he came to six missions including the final, which was only lost on penalties against Yugoslavia. He made his debut in the U-21 national team on April 26, 1988 in Kreuzlingen in the 8-0 victory over Switzerland, to which he contributed one goal.
