Martin Tschumpert

Martin Tschumpert (born September 2, 1830 in Igis , today in Landquart ; † June 11, 1911 in Silvaplana ; citizen of Igis) was a Swiss Reformed pastor who worked on a monumental dictionary of the German Bündner dialects throughout his life . After his death, the manuscript became one of the most important sources of the Swiss Idiotikon , the dictionary of the Swiss German language .

Life

Tschumpert was ordained in 1857 and, after being accepted into the Graubünden Synod, held parish posts in Haldenstein (1859–1869), Valzeina (1869–1872), Silvaplana (1872–1879), Zernez (1879–1886), Bivio (1887–1895), Casaccia (1895-1899) and Vicosoprano (1899-1903). He spent his retirement in Silvaplana.

He was married twice, the first to Ursula Roffler from Grüsch (1838–1861) and the second to Maria Colani from La Punt (1845–1911).

From the 1860s on, Tschumpert worked on a dictionary that was supposed to collect the entire historical and dialectical ( Walser German and Churerrheintal ) vocabulary of the German varieties spoken in the canton of Graubünden ; In addition, folklore was given an important place in the spirit of classical dialect lexicography. The manuscript that Tschumpert had worked on until his death comprises over 3,100 pages in folio format. In addition, there is a grammatical overview, a field name collection, a register and more. The author wrote an almost 400 paragraph comprehensive set of rules on how the dictionary should have been printed. Five deliveries (A to the beginning of H) appeared in print between 1880 and 1896.

When Tschumpert died in 1911, Albert Bachmann , editor-in-chief of Schweizerischer Idiotikons , viewed the estate and, in 1914, arranged for it to be purchased with funds from the Canton of Graubünden and the Swiss Confederation . The evaluation of the manuscript resulted in 22,000 pieces of paper, which were incorporated into the material of the idiot . The Chumpert dictionary, which remained unfinished, was incorporated into the Swiss Idioticon and its editing is still used today as one of the main sources for the Canton of Graubünden.

Around the same time as Tschumpert, the Graubünden lawyer Valentin Bühler was working on his Davos dictionary, which also remained unfinished.
