Martin (von) Kempe (born June 5, 1642 in Königsberg ; † July 31, 1683 ibid) was a German poet, literary historian and translator . 1677 he was selected by Emperor Leopold ennobled .

Life

Kempe was born in Königsberg, where his family moved from Wohlau in Silesia. He attended high school in Danzig , where he became acquainted with the poet Johann Peter Titz . On July 12, 1660 , he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg . Further studies followed in Helmstedt, and from 1661 in Jena , where he received his master's degree in 1665 . He was crowned a poet in Weimar by Georg Neumark . In Nuremberg Sigmund von Birken accepted him in 1665 as the Prussian Damon in the Pegnese Flower Order . 1668 followed the admission as the chosen one in the fruit- bearing society . In the German-minded co-operative , he was the Immortal called, and Elbschwanenorden he was Kleodor . In the 17th century, the Baroque era , Kempe was the only German poet of standing who was a member of all the major linguistic societies .

Kempe went on study trips to Denmark , Holland and England in order to expand his literary knowledge at the university libraries there; he spent a long time at Oxford University . Around 1671 he was appointed historiographer for the Elector of Brandenburg in Königsberg . Kempe is listed (with portrait) under the name Martin von Kempen in the German Biographical Nobility Repertory (see web links).

Kempe's work, which has in part been unedited to this day, testifies to its extraordinary versatility. From German poetry to learned Latin treatises, from shepherd poems to historiography, his work also includes translations from Dutch and English.

Over the years, Kempe had an intensive correspondence with Sigmund von Birken , which provides information about the literary scene of the Baroque century - from the conception of works to the technical processes of printing to the design of the book and edition. In addition, this correspondence sheds light on the intellectual relationships among the Baroque authors.
