Mates of State have been an American indie rock duo since 1997 . The group consists of Kori Gardner (vocals, keyboard, synthesizer ) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drums, glockenspiel , percussion , synthesizer).

Band history

The group's first contact took place in Lawrence , Kansas while both were involved in other music projects. In 1997 the group was formed in Lawrence, Kansas while Gardner and Hammel played together in the band Vosotros . A short time later, Hammel began studying medicine, which he gave up in 2001 to advance the music project together with Gardner. In the same year both married. They have two daughters together, Magnolia and June Elizabeth.

Gardner and Hammel lived in San Francisco until they moved to East Haven, Connecticut in 2004 . They sold their home in East Haven in February 2007 and currently live in New York City .

The band's music is characterized by the harmony of male and female voices. Both members sing with great intensity and often in the higher regions of their voices. Often they sing different but complementary melodies and texts simultaneously. The pace is almost always fast, similar to that in electronic clubs or dance music.
