The Mathildenplatz is a small park in Darmstadt .

History and location

The 150 meter long and 50 meter wide park was built in the first half of the 19th century and was named after Mathilde Karoline of Bavaria . Mathildenplatz was laid out according to plans by the architect Georg Moller . On the northern edge stood the main gate , which was replaced by the building of the regional court in 1874 . On the east side, town houses were built in the classical style. The new office building was built on the southern edge . The stables stood on the west side ; which was replaced by the new justice building in the 2000s.

The originally tree-lined Mathildenplatz was converted into a lawn around 1900. The green area was divided into two square areas, each with two crossing paths. In 1908 the paths were paved with mosaic paving . The two way intersections were emphasized by round, three-colored mosaic paving ornament. A double row of trees has been planted around Mathildenplatz.

Lion fountain

The lion fountain from 1824 is a three-story fountain made of yellow and red sandstone . The fountain in the center of the square was designed by Franz Heger . In 1840 the fountain - which originally stood on Luisenplatz - was moved to Mathildenplatz. The fountain consists of a round water basin, framed by a three-step staircase, with a second, inner high basin, in the middle of which a flat, cast-iron bowl rests on an octagonal pedestal . The base relief, shaped like a coat of arms, shows two dolphins winding around the trident of Neptune. This ornament can be found on all bases. All plastic parts of the fountain are sculptures by Johann Baptist Scholl the Elder. Ä. The cast iron bowl was made by the Utsch brothers in Bacharach . The processed yellow sandstone comes from Heilbronn , the red sandstone from Bettingen am Main .

At the lion fountain (a so-called mixed fountain ) the three forms of rising, falling and pouring water are combined; they make a picturesque water feature . The fountain rises from the top shell. The water it floods back falls like a veil waterfall into the lowest round basin. In between, a second, narrower basin, which receives its water from spindly lion heads. This middle basin is divided by pedestals protruding beyond its edge, on which lions rest. They in turn spew water into the lower basin.

Monuments

The Gustav Lorenz Monument is located in the northern part of the park .

On the southern edge of Mathildenplatz there is the Abbot Vogler memorial donated in 1890 by the "Cölner Männer-Gesangverein" and Darmstadt art lovers . The memorial commemorates the composer and music teacher Abbot Georg Joseph Vogler (Abbot Vogler) and his two most important students, Giacomo Meyerbeer and Carl Maria von Weber . A square, low wrought-iron fence surrounds the monument. The bronze bust of "Abbe" stands on a syenite base with reliefs by Giacomo Meyerbeer and Carl Maria von Weber . The Abbot Vogler Memorial was created based on a design by Professor Robert Henze .
