Max friend
Max Friedrich Ernst Freund (born February 27, 1879 in Hainichen , Saxony ; † June 16, 1980 in Houston , Texas ) was an American German studies scholar and university professor of German origin.
Life
Family and education
Born in Hainichen, Max Freund, son of Friedrich Wilhelm Freund and his wife Augusta Laura, née Heidel, graduated from the Städtisches Realgymnasium Leipzig, immediately turned to studying German, Romance and English at the University of Leipzig and at the Sorbonne , acquired in 1902 he obtained the academic degree of Dr. phil.
On July 28, 1927, Max Freund married the engineering daughter Anna Regine nee Keck. The daughters Helene Hasel Heidi and Margarete Anna Regina came from this marriage. Max Freund died in Houston , Texas in June 1980 at the age of 101 .
Professional background
After completing his studies, Max Freund took on a position as Assistant Lecturer in German at University College in Liverpool in England , in 1903 the only 24-year-old was appointed Professor of Modern Languages at Queen's College in Belfast , which was renamed Queen's University Belfast in 1908, In 1909 he switched to the Professorship of German and Teutonic Philology . After participating in the First World War for a year , Max Freund returned to Germany in 1915, where he was given a position as a lecturer in English at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , and in 1917 he moved to the Philipps University in Marburg in the same position .
In 1925, Max Freund accepted an offer from Rice University for a professorship in German . Freund, who also headed the German Department there , retired in September 1947 . Max Freund, who was particularly involved in the German-American Societies of Houston , completed his translation and edition of Gustav Dresel 's Houston Journal in his retirement .
