Live and act

Max Schneider, son of the master tailor Hersch Suchir (known as Hermann) Schneider from Sambor ( Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria ) and his wife Anna, née. Wohrischek, worked as a photographer in Vienna from 1913. After the First World War he ran his studio for portrait photography together with his wife, the Viennese photographer Sophie Stark (married on August 21, 1919) in Vienna- Josefstadt , Kochgasse 20. After the early death of his wife, he ran the studio at Kochgasse 20–22, initially on his own under the name Photo - Graphics .

Since the early 1920s he worked as a photographer for the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and took pictures of the entire faculty of this faculty. In 1927, “the master of doctor portraits” made a tableau with 163 portraits of professors from this faculty. As a result, the Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift in particular regularly published photos and drawings by Schneider, a.o. a. by Ernst Finger , Ernst Fuchs , Ferdinand Hochstetter , Guido Holzknecht and Julius Mannaberg .

From the mid-1920s Schneider was a member of the photographers' cooperative in Vienna . In May 1928 he showed a series of red chalk sketches at the group exhibition in Linz of the Gewerbeförderungsinstitut für Fachfotografie, an exhibition organized by the professional association of Austrian photographers' cooperatives , the execution of which received special mention. The academically trained painter Schneider also worked on his photos with overpainting or retouching .

In November 1933, he offered the dean of the medical faculty Leopold Doctor the free production of photographic portraits of the entire "professors' college" in order to then use them in the form of drawings corresponding to the work by Olga Prager (1872–1930 ) to publish. Schneider hoped to achieve financial success for this company by selling the doctor portraits in bookshops.

After the " Anschluss of Austria ", Max Schneider and his then wife Lucie were threatened by Nazi persecution because of their Jewish origins after the Nazi racial laws that came into force in Austria in March 1938 . After Schneider's studio had been owned by his wife since 1934, only she has submitted an asset registration to the Ministry of Economics and Labor to record the Reich flight tax . As with many other Jewish businessmen, his studio was closed immediately after the so-called “ Reichskristallnacht ” and Schneider himself was forced to give up his trade license on November 10, 1938. From January 1, 1939, he was also banned from practicing his profession , which forced him to emigrate . Together with his wife, Schneider was able to flee Austria to Rotterdam in January 1939 . From this point on, nothing is known about his further life.

Aryanization by Wilhelm Hlosta

Wilhelm Hlosta (1904–1984), who has been a photographer since the early 1930s, “took over” Schneider's studio in the course of an aryanization in 1938/39 and sold Schneider's photos and prints under his name.

In 1940 Max Schneider's studio was " wound up " by Franz Stern on behalf of the property transaction office .

Note on Schneider's estate in Austrian archives

Schneider's work for the faculty is now in the photo and image archive of the collections of the Medical University of Vienna.

Many photos are also in the holdings of the picture archive of the Austrian National Library . A considerable number of his portraits are still inventoried there, either without naming his name and / or date of creation, for example the tableau with 163 portraits of professors of Viennese medicine. Faculty , or indicates Wilhelm Hlosta as the author, because the provenance research of this library has not processed the scientific results that have been available for years in its holdings until today.

Trivia

In 1929 Schneider had a car accident at parliament in which his passenger was seriously injured.

Works

In addition to the photographic recordings, Schneider also created a number of portrait drawings:

The oil painting Julius Wagner-Jauregg by Wilhelm Krausz was based on Schneider's photo portrait.
