Maximilian Georg Joseph Neumayer (born April 1, 1789 in Worms-Neuhausen , Rhineland-Palatinate , † November 12, 1866 in Nantes , France ) was a French Général de division of German descent.

Life

He was born as the son of the prince-bishop of Worms hospital administrator Johann Gottfried Neumayer († 1797) and his wife Anna Maria geb. Hermann born. His twin sister Anne Marie (1789–1869) was the mother of the well-known French history painter Adolphe Yvon (1817–1893).

Worms fell to France in 1797 as part of the German territories on the left bank of the Rhine and until 1814 belonged to the French Département du Mont-Tonnerre .

Neumayer attended grammar school in Worms and enrolled in the Saint-Cyr military school on November 23, 1807 , which he left on March 24, 1809 as a sous-lieutenant . He took part in the Napoleonic campaigns in Spain and Portugal , where he was mentioned four times for bravery in the order of the day. On July 15, 1813 he was promoted to Capitaine , and on February 25, 1815 to Knight of the Legion of Honor . At the Battle of Waterloo he took part on the French side.

Then he returned home and took up a position at the Speyer land registry . However, the Bavarian civil service remained only a brief episode. On September 16, 1820, he was reactivated as a French officer. From 1823 to 1828 he took part in the Spanish campaign. Here, too, he was mentioned by name in the order of the day because of his bravery. On June 3, 1831 Neumayer was appointed officer of the Legion of Honor, in 1833 he fought as a lieutenant colonel in Algeria , and on September 20, 1837 he became a colonel .

On September 29, 1843, Rheinhesse was promoted to the Maréchal de camp and brigade commanders in Lyon . On May 1, 1847, he became commander of the Legion of Honor, and on July 10, 1848, he took over command of the 1st French Army Division in Paris . In 1853 Neumayer was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor. He was also a Knight of the Military Merit Order of St. Louis , the Belgian Order of Leopold and the Spanish Order of Ferdinand .

He died with the rank of Général de division on November 12, 1866 in Nantes and was buried in the Misericorde cemetery according to the Catholic rite . He had forbidden military pomp at his funeral, the Requiem took place in the parish church of Notre-Dame de Bon-Port.

Since July 1, 1848, Maximilian Georg Joseph Neumayer was married to Prudence Trochu (1825-1908), sister of General Louis Jules Trochu (1815-1896). They had a son named Georges Neumayer (1849–1922) as offspring.

In his work The Class Struggles in France 1848 to 1850, Karl Marx describes Maximilian Georg Joseph Neumayer as the right arm of the conservative General Nicolas Changarnier .
