Mayday - Katastrophenflug 52 is an American disaster film from 2005 , the plot of which is based on the novel Mayday by Nelson DeMille .

action

On a scheduled flight from San Francisco to Tokyo , a supersonic Straton jet has to maneuver due to bad weather on the edge of a Navy test area.

Commander Slan has a cruise missile fired from a jet fighter for testing purposes ; the target is a drone that is currently in the vicinity of the passenger aircraft. The missile misses its real target; instead it hits the line machine and pierces the hull on both sides. But there is no detonation because the missile does not carry a warhead, but only a dummy of the same weight. There is now a large hole on both the port and starboard sides. There is a loss of pressure in the cabin, and a number of passengers - some with their seats - are pulled into the open by the suction. As a result of a lack of oxygen, both the pilots and most of the passengers passed out. Before that, however, the autopilot could still be activated so that the machine is still in a stable flight position.

A few passengers and a flight attendant are still conscious. On board is the amateur pilot John Berry, who with the help of the flight attendant Sharon tries to make an emergency landing. Since the on-board radio has failed, the only option left is to communicate with the ground control via Datalink - a type of electronic teleprinter. John Berry manages to turn the machine 180 ° just before it is shot down by the military. The plane was classified as a drifting wreck because no survivors are suspected on board.

The Navy wants to cover up the incident, and the airline and insurance company also want to crash the plane by deliberately sending false information to the amateur pilot. But the amateur pilot thwarts their plans and stops the fuel being drained. He finally managed to crash land at the airport in San Francisco, where the nose wheel buckled and the machine caught fire in the front area, but there were no further victims to complain about.

With the printout of the Datalink computer, Berry and Sharon want to address the press and thus bring the truth to light.

criticism

“The plot and heroes come from the construction kit, there is a lot of nonsense in terms of flying, and the tricks are bad at first - but with the impressive impact there is still tension. Conclusion: more unstable climb than high-flyer. "
