Mayes Castillero de Rubeo (* 1962 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican costume designer .

Life

Rubeo was born in 1962 into a family of twelve. In the 1980s she settled in Los Angeles , where she worked as an assistant in the costume department of various film productions. At the same time, she completed an apprenticeship at Los Angeles Trade Tech and later studied at the UCLA Extension and in Italy. After completing her training, she got a job as an assistant to Enrico Sabbatini .

This was followed by first work as assistant to the costume designer in the production of films such as Talk Radio , Born on July 4th , The total memory - Total Recall or The Client . In 1996, director John Sayles hired her as the main costume designer for his film Men with Guns . Further orders for larger productions followed. She had her breakthrough in 2006 when she was hired as a costume designer for Mel Gibson's period drama Apocalypto . Three years later she worked with James Cameron on his science fiction film Avatar - Departure for Pandora . For this achievement she was nominated together with Deborah Lynn Scott for the Costume Designers Guild Award in the category Excellence in Fantasy Film . Other major projects were John Carter - Between Two Worlds , World War Z and Warcraft: The Beginning .

She was married to the Italian set designer Bruno Rubeo until his death in 2011 . The marriage resulted in the son Marco Rubeo , who works as a film set designer.
