The Quest - Hunt for the Spear of Fate (Original title: The Librarian - Quest for the Spear ) is an adventure film parody by director Peter Winther , shot in 2004 in the USA.

action

Flynn Carsen, whose hobby and greatest joy is learning, is already over thirty years old, holds 22 degrees and is still a student, has no girlfriend and lives with his mother Margie, who is constantly trying to match him. Lacking practical experience, his archeology professor ensures that Flynn leaves the university . Since there are still six months until the beginning of the next semester, he decides to look for a job, as recommended by the professor.

He receives an invitation to an interview as a librarian by post . Because of his qualifications and his humanity, Flynn received the job immediately and, to his great surprise, was to learn that his new job is the repository of the most important and long-lost or even legendary objects in human history, including the Excalibur sword , Pandora's box , the ark of the covenant , the “ goose that lays the golden eggs ” and one of the three parts of the “ spear of fate ”, which is said to have inflicted the wound on Jesus on the cross.

When this fragment of the spear is stolen the following night, it is his job to retrieve this and the two other pieces hidden in the world, as the spear supposedly gives its owner absolute power. The only indication of the whereabouts of the other pieces is a book written in the language of the birds, which, according to the film, was spoken by all people before God decided after the biblical Tower of Babel to give people different languages. Carsen manages to learn the language on the plane on the way to the second spear fragment, however.

He receives help in his task from another library employee, Nicole Noone, who is plagued by her conscience as she accuses herself of being responsible for the deaths of the previous librarian and her lover, Edward Wilde. In fact, he turns out to be still alive and as the leader of the " Brotherhood of the Snake", which has set itself the task of destroying the library and is also responsible for the theft of the spear piece. Wilde and his people follow Carsen and Noone on their way to the second fragment and ambush them, only to let them lead them to the third fragment, since Wilde himself does not understand the language of the birds. Carsen and Noone, who have since fallen in love with each other, use a trick to shake off the "Brotherhood of the Snake" and to secure at least the third fragment of the spear.

The following night, however, the section is stolen and Noone is kidnapped without Carsen noticing anything. He is informed that a very strong electromagnetic field is required to put the pieces together , as previously measured only once in a particular pyramid with an end stone made of gold. Carsen realizes that it can only be a matter of the pyramid, which he and his fellow students and his archeology professor had previously exactly recreated in a miniaturized model. After a spectacular final battle, he finally manages to get the already assembled spear back for the library.

criticism

“Well-played, entertaining entertainment based on a comic book, which unwinds an adventure story in Indiana Jones-style. At the end the film lacks density, so that it only insufficiently completes the storyline. "

Awards

The film was nominated for the Saturn Award in 2005 in four categories - for portraying Noah Wyle, Kyle MacLachlan and Sonya Walger and for Best TV Film. He was also nominated for the 2005 Motion Picture Sound Editors Award ( Golden Reel Award ) for sound editing and was nominated for a scene in the Himalayas for the Visual Effects Society Award . David N. Titcher was nominated for the 2006 Writers Guild of America Award.

Sequels

2006 was followed by the sequel The Quest - The Librarian - Return to King Solomon's Mines and in 2008 the third part, The Quest - Der Fluch des Judaskelch (The Librarian - The Curse of the Judas Chalice), both directed by Jonathan Frakes .

Since December 2014, the American broadcaster TNT has been broadcasting the television series The Quest (originally: The Librarians ), in which the story of the librarian and the library is continued. In addition to Noah Wyle, who is again taking on the role of Flynn Carsen, Rebecca Romijn , Christian Kane , Lindy Booth and John Kim play a group of young librarians.
