Melchior von Fölckersam (also Fölkersahm or Fölckersamb; born January 15, 1601 in Kalkuhnen ( Kurland ), † September 27, 1665 in Mitau ) was a statesman from Courland . He was court marshal in Schwerin and later chancellor and senior councilor in the Duchy of Courland and Semgalle .

origin

His grandfather was the Kurland councilor Melchior von Fölckersam († 1592). His father was the judge Johann von Fölckersam († 1624), who was married to Ursula von Budberg on Garßen . The noble family comes from the Lower Saxon nobility , the master batch of kurländisch-German branch begins in the late 15th century.

Life

Melchior von Fölckersam studied at the University of Königsberg , the University of Rostock and the Dutch University of Leiden . From 1622 he was court master of the Prince of East Friesland Enno III. (1563–1625), from 1624 he held the office of court counselor in Emden , he then changed in 1625 as court master to Duke Joachim Ernst of Holstein and Plön and in 1628 took over the position of the Mecklenburg court marshal in Schwerin . From 1630 he served the Hereditary Prince and later Duke Jakob Kettler (1610–1682) of Courland and Semgallia as an advisor and companion. As an inspector (administrator), he administered the ducal estates in the absence of Duke Jacob. In 1638 he was appointed head captain of Goldingen and from 1650 he was chancellor of the Duchy of Courland and Semgallia. He became an important statesman for the duchy and carried out several diplomatic missions on behalf of the duke . On the initiative of the Duke was the intermediary of Louis XIV. A peace conference (1638-1715) in Lübeck organized and instructed Fölckersam as head of mission, Congress should Poland-Lithuania with Sweden reconcile, another historic mission was in 1660 to participate in the peace conference to Oliva on of which he was a leading figure.
