Memoriam is an English death metal band from Birmingham .
history
The band was founded in early 2016 by the bolt thrower singer Karl Willetts and the benediction bassist Frank Healy. Both musicians had been friends for a long time and had wanted to start a project together for a long time. Since Bolt Thrower were to announce their dissolution a short time later and Benediction were also inactive, the musicians finally put their plan into action. Shortly before the founding of Memoriam, both musicians had to cope with severe blows of fate after the death of the bolt-thrower drummer Martin "Kiddy" Kearns and Frank Healy's father. To honor the two deceased, Willetts and Healy eventually formed Memoriam. According to Karl Willetts, the band is "a true celebration of life through death metal".
The band was completed by the drummer Andy Whale, who played with Karl Willetts at Bolt Thrower until 1994, and the guitarist Scott Fairfax, who plays bass in the band Cerebral Fix and helped out with Benediction as a live guitarist. Initially, the musicians in the rehearsal room wanted some cover songs play, play small concerts and maybe a 7 "single release. After a short time, however, Fairfax started writing new original songs. Before the end of the band's formation published Memoriam singles The Hellfire demos and Surrounded by Death and performed at the festivals Party.San and Bloodstock Open Air . In June 2016, the German record label Nuclear Blast signed the band.
On March 24, 2017, the band released their debut album For the Fallen , the album cover of which was designed by Dan Seagrave . The album debuted at number 16 in the German and at number 46 in the Austrian album charts, and it was also at number four in the German vinyl charts . In summer 2017 Memoriam played at the festivals Wacken Open Air , Summer Breeze , Graspop Metal Meeting , Copenhell and the Roadburn Festival . Then the band took with the producers James Pitts and Jon Dewsbury their second studio album The Silent Vigil ( English : The Mahnwache ) on, the album cover was again designed by Dan Seagrave.
The Silent Vigil was released on March 23, 2018 and reached number 32 in the German and number 73 in the Swiss album charts. During the summer of the year the band played at the Bloodstock Open Air, Rock Hard Festival and Hellfest festivals . In September 2018, Andy Whale announced that he was leaving for family reasons. However, Whale returned after a short time. The band recorded their third studio album in spring 2019, which was produced by Russ Russel. Requiem for Mankind was released on June 21, 2019 and reached number 20 on the German and number 54 of the Swiss album charts.
In March 2020 the band signed a contract with the German label Reaper Entertainment .
style
The basis of Memoriam's music is the classic death metal of the 1980s and is similar to the music of Bolt Thrower and Benediction. According to Karl Willetts, guitarist Scott Fairfax is around ten years younger than his bandmates and is more influenced by technical death metal of the 1990s and bands like Suffocation and Monstrosity .
