People who pass by is the title of a Swiss sound film drama that Max Haufler realized in 1941/42 for Gloria Film AG in Zurich , whose first director was Günther Stapenhorst . Haufler wrote the script together with Albert Jakob Welti and Horst Budjuhn . The main roles were cast with well-known Swiss actors such as Adolf Manz , Rudolf Bernhard , Emil Hegetschweiler and Lukas Ammann . The character role of Boschka was played by the actress and cabaret artist Therese Giehse , who emigrated from Nazi Germany .
In the film, two different ways of life, two different worlds meet in rich contrasts: the sedentary peasantry and the traveling artist people.

Carl Zuckmayer's stage play Katharina Knie from 1929 served as the literary template for the script . However, the authors reworked it in such a way that a Swiss work of its own was created. Harry Ringer and Otto Ritter were the photographers. Fritz Butz designed the scene, Ruth Zürcher took care of the cloakroom. The music for the film was composed by Hans Haug and it was shot in the Bellerive studio .
In German-speaking Switzerland, “People who pass by” premiered on February 5, 1942 in Zurich; in francophone Switzerland the film was called Gens qui passent. The film was premiered in Austria on January 16, 1948 after the Second World War. It has also been shown in France, Denmark and Sweden.

The audience's reception was cautious, although the majority of the press votes were positive. The export of the film to Reich Germany was prevented in Berlin. Despite positive reviews and solid audience figures, the film was unable to bring in its production costs of CHF 200,000. Due to the financial losses, the production company got into dire straits; In 1943 she had to stop producing feature films.
"People who pass by" was explosive in a climate of spiritual national defense . The encounter between the circus girl Marina Horn and the Zealand farmer Hans Bucher is not limited to a difficult love story; rather, the respectful perspective on the life of a traveling circus troupe also conveys an interest in other than bourgeois lifestyles. Most of them are unknown or little known, big names tend to play supporting roles. But that certainly contributes to the authenticity. This is further underpinned by the noble but rustic pictures and Haufler's unobtrusive staging. “People who pass by” is not the most demanding, most exciting or most important film that Switzerland produced at that time, but cinema with strong craftsmanship and apt content. The Swiss radio and television SRF, which broadcast “People who pass by” on June 9, 2010, brought the film on a DVD together with the specials “Historical background on the making of the film / film: Memory of Max Haufler (45 min.) / Contribution to saving the film material ”in the trade.
