In 1958/59 what was then Daimler-Benz AG took over Auto Union , which also included the Düsseldorf plant. At the beginning of the 1950s, Rheinmetall's former Plant II from the 1890s, intended to be dismantled as an armaments factory after the Second World War, was initially used by Auto Union with a lease agreement and later taken over entirely. In 1964, Daimler-Benz sold Auto Union to Volkswagen , with the Düsseldorf and Vitoria plants remaining with Daimler-Benz. The plant coined the unofficial name "Düsseldorfer Transporter" or also DüDo for the Mercedes-Benz T2 manufactured there .

In 1936 the subsidiary Daimler-Benz Motoren GmbH built a plant for aircraft engines ( DB 601 / DB 605 ) in Genshagen (around 9 kilometers south of Berlin , since 1997 part of Ludwigsfelde ). During the war, 11,000 prisoners of war and forced laborers worked in what was then the "National Socialist model company" . From July 17, 1965, trucks of the W50 type were manufactured in Ludwigsfelde , and from 1987 the L60 was added to the production program, which was actually supposed to replace the W50 .

592,078 trucks were manufactured up to 1990, then production was discontinued due to the changed political situation and the associated decline in demand.

On June 27, 1990 the VEB-IFA Kombinat Nutzfahrzeuge Ludwigsfelde was dissolved by the Treuhandanstalt and converted into a GmbH , which on February 1, 1991 became "Nutzfahrzeuge Ludwigsfelde GmbH" on the production side and on March 1, 1991 the development side became the "Entwicklungsgesellschaft Ludwigsfelde" rose.

The plant in North Charleston ( South Carolina ) has been producing Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter since 2006, as well as the Viano for the American market under the name Metris. In the first few years, the vehicles were completely manufactured in Düsseldorf, then dismantled and delivered to the USA, where they were reassembled ( SKD ). The background to this is, among other things, the high tariffs that the USA levies on commercial vehicle imports. After the plant was expanded, there has also been complete production in addition to the SKD since September 2018. The Sprinters will be completely manufactured in the future, Metris vans will still be SKD remounted until further notice.
