action

The film tells the story of bestselling author Johnny Ryan, who publishes successful romance novels, in three chapters out of chronological order. In the first chapter, entitled "Before", Johnny's love life initially focuses on one-night stands . He has little idea of true love, even if he writes about it full-time. At a party to mark the release of his latest novel, he met Mercy Bennett, who turned him off. A few days later, he and his agent Jake discussed the first reviews of his book that had just appeared, which were consistently positive, except for Mercy Bennett's slap. Johnny then visits Mercy at the hotel and asks her to discuss his book with him personally. Mercy accepts the offer and from then on meets regularly with Johnny. A love relationship develops. Mercy wants and has to go back to New York, Johnny asks her to stay. This is followed by a cut titled “After” and Johnny, now bearded and very desperate, starts a fight in a bar. He ends up in a holding cell and is picked up by Dane. When he goes to a club with his friends, he meets Heather, with whom he had planned a one-night stand the year before, but who he moved because of Mercy. Johnny accompanies Heather to her apartment, the night ends in complete frustration for both of them. At dinner with Dane and Chris, Johnny Robin is introduced, whom he finds quite likeable. When Robin talks about her dead husband, Johnny abruptly leaves the apartment. He seeks consolation from his father Gerry. Various flashbacks show excerpts from her relationship with Mercy. In one of the sequences from the past, the asthmatic Mercy can be seen standing in an elevator. The elevator gets stuck and Mercy has an asthma attack. Mercy left her handbag with the rescue spray in Johnny's car. She dies and Johnny's change is explained by Mercy's sudden death. The last chapter, titled "Six Months Later" shows another party on the occasion of the publication of Johnny's fourth book. At this party he meets Robin again and agrees to talk to her about the new book called "Mercy".

reception

The lexicon of international films judged: “A tragic love story in which there is a lot of talk about relationships, which nevertheless hardly goes to the heart. The performance of the main actor, who plays a convincing father-son relationship with his biological father, is remarkable. ” Roger Ebert found the story“ predictable and not very satisfactory ”, the strength of the film lies in the performance of the actors. Ebert missed a "little more depth". Michael Ordoña wrote in the Los Angeles Times , " Mercy is a romantic drama with some good qualities - including seriousness and strong acting - but not enough to get over the clichés it claims to be."
