Meredith Ann Barrett (born March 20, 1980 in New York City , New York ) is an American ecologist and primatologist .

Career

Meredith A. Barrett studied earth and environmental sciences from 1999 to 2003 at Wesleyan University in Middletown , Connecticut . She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 2003 and was accepted into the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honorary Society . She then spent three months on a National Science Foundation funded project at the University of Arizona on Lake Tanganyika . There she examined the endemic gastropod fauna of the shore zone. From February 2004 to January 2005, she completed several months of training and then worked as a guide at the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in California . She spent the following year doing several biological field research assignments for the Department of the Environment in Grand Rapids , Minnesota and for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge . She spent the first half of 2006 on a project to protect biodiversity on the island of Bioko , where she carried out population-biological studies of the primate fauna and dealt with the local trade in bushmeat . From August 2006 she attended Duke University in Durham , North Carolina , where she worked with Anne D. Yoder at the Duke Lemur Center . In May 2011, she was awarded the dissertation Understanding Environmental and Anthropogenic Drivers of Health lemur in Madagascar: The Importance of a One Health Perspective under the direction of Anne D. Yoder for Ph.D. PhD in ecology from Duke University .

Barrett is affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco and the University of California, Berkeley and researches and publishes on environmental factors in communicable and chronic diseases such as asthma, the health effects of environmental changes on humans and animals, One Health , Big Data in healthcare and biodiversity.

In 2016 Barrett co-authored the first descriptions of Microcebus manitatra , Ganzhorns Mausmaki and Microcebus boraha .
