Merle Rubin (born 1949 in New York City , † November 30, 2006 in Los Angeles - Hollywood ) was an American literary critic and science journalist who worked for the Los Angeles Times , Wall Street Journal , Chicago Tribune , Washington Times and Christian Science Monitor worked.

Life

Rubin grew up in the Plainview community on Long Island . She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University . Your Ph.D. earned it from the University of Virginia .

While at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut , she met her future husband. They married in 1972 while they were both advanced graduate students in Charlottesville , Virginia . When her husband Martin Rubin was offered a position as a lecturer in English literature at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena , the two moved to California in 1975 . He, too, later became a full-time literary critic.

The literary scholar made a name for herself as a journalist nationwide as a book critic with a broad spectrum. In addition to her focus on fictional literature, she also discussed new publications from cultural and historical studies, religion and art studies. Mostly she could manage a book or two a week. Her home library contained thousands of books after 30 years of professional practice. She worked for a number of national newspapers and magazines in the United States.

Rubin was a bridge builder especially for authors from Europe such as Anita Brookner , AS Byatt and Hilary Mantel . When they came to Los Angeles, there were visits. The Dutch writer Arnon Grunberg also held her in high regard.

Merle Rubin died of cancer in 2006 at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center in Hollywood at the age of only 57. She left her husband, sister, and mother.
