The Roman Catholic Chapel of St. Michael in the Meckenheim district of Merl is a church building from the beginning of the 20th century, consecrated to the Archangel Michael and listed as a monument. The chapel belongs to the Catholic parish community of Meckenheim in the Rhein-Sieg district dean of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

history

In 1690, the married couple Michael and Anna Wüllens, born in Merl, financed Hullens, the construction of a chapel on truss base . A stone cross made in 1707 on the occasion of the death of Wüllens is on the outer wall of today's chapel. The first chapel was demolished on April 4, 1899 to make way for a new stone building. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on July 2, 1899 . The chapel was built according to plans by the architect Anton Becker from Bonn. It is held in the neo-Gothic style and equipped with a ribbed vault . The also neo-Gothic carved altar stands on a sandstone canteen , in the middle of which there is a representation of the Lamb of God . The chapel was on June 10, 1900 consecrated . From then on, the population referred to the church as the "Merler Dom" . The chapel is still used regularly for church services today.

On August 4, 1971, the responsible church council submitted an application to the Archdiocese of Cologne to build a larger church, as the population in the Merl district grew rapidly. The new building was delayed due to financial problems. On December 8, 1985, the new Merler parish church on Zypressenweg, also with the patronage of St. Michael, was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Josef Plöger .

Church window

The twelve stained glass windows in the chapel and the two in the sacristy were made in 1900 by the company of the glass maker Wilhelm Derix using antique , cathedral glass , lead and black solder . Mainly the windows show ornaments , two windows contain medallions : Aloisius von Gonzaga and Agnes von Rome ( donor inscription : Gift of the young men and virgins from Merl ) as well as John the Baptist and Catherine of Alexandria . Two other windows contain biblical motifs: Sacred Heart (in the tracery ) and The Holy Family with Saint Michael (also in the tracery).

Organs

In the new building of the chapel from 1900, the organ from the previous building was initially used. In 1908 it was replaced by a new organ with a pneumatic pocket drawer designed by Johannes Klais Senior , designed by Friedrich Witzig . In 1962 this organ was given up and an electronic organ was temporarily installed. In 1988 a new organ was commissioned from Klais and installed in 1990. The rear parapet organ is a single-manual instrument with nine registers , placed in the middle of the gallery .
