Hans-Wolfgang Theobald (* 1954 in Würzburg ) is a German organ builder , musicologist and church musician .

Life

Hans-Wolfgang Theobald was born in Würzburg in 1954. From 1963 to 1982 he was a member of the Würzburger Domsingknaben . As a teenager he decided to take up the profession of organ builder. From 1975 to 1978 he completed an apprenticeship with Otto Hoffmann in Ostheim vor der Rhön . For his journeyman's piece, he was awarded the 1st national winner in the practical performance competition of the German youth craftsmen . The scholarship associated with the award enabled him to study at the University of Würzburg , where he studied history , folklore and musicology from 1978 to 1986 . In 1988 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the organ builder Johann Georg Markert from Ostheim, whose grandson and workshop successor Otto Hoffmann he completed his training.

Theobald was active as a church musician at various churches, for example at the Holy Cross Church in Würzburg , St. Maria Königin in Ostheim, St. Michael in Merl (Meckenheim) and St. Marien in Bonn . Since 1982 he has been working for the organ building company Johannes Klais in Bonn as a technician and head of the restoration department. Project planning and construction of new organs and restorations form the focus of his work. Together with Philipp Klais and Clemens Ganz , he planned and organized, among other things, the new construction of the organ in the nave of Cologne Cathedral , which was inaugurated in 1998. He conceived as an expert repair, modification and expansion of numerous important nationally, often under monument protection standing historical organs .

Theobald writes articles about organ projects and historical organs for the journals Ars Organi and Acta Organologica of the Society of Organ Friends (GdO), for the association journal Musica sacra and for the ISO Journal , the specialist journal of the International Society of Organbuilders (ISO).

He is also active as a lecturer at the commercial Oskar-Walcker-Schule in Ludwigsburg in the field of training as a “restorer in the craft” and gives lectures at organ conferences. Theobald has been a member of the main committee of the Society of Organ Friends (GdO) since 2011.
