History of the church
The three-aisled predecessor building of today's church originated from the Romanesque period and some parts of it went back to the 11th century. It was on the site of today's church, but was smaller and probably severely easted . The foundations were found when the new church heating was installed in 1968. Gothic additions or changes have not yet been proven, but can be assumed. The old cemetery was right next to the church on today's church square. The series of well-known pastors begins with Johann von Attendorn, who is attested to in 1380, but remains incomplete until the end of the 18th century.
In Altendorf there was a chapel on the Virneburger Hof, a free aristocratic estate, but it had already fallen into disrepair in 1582. It was incorporated into the Ersdorfer Church.
The church burned down completely on March 1, 1869 after a lightning strike. One of the saved objects is the wooden Vesper picture ( Pietà ) from around 1600 , which can still be seen in the church today. The parsonage barn was converted into an emergency church . Pastor Wilhelm Klein laid the foundation stone for today's church in 1877, for the financing of which the church council had decided on a house collection. For a long time there was heated argument about the location; from Altendorf's point of view, a location between the villages at the cemetery was preferred. The royal government in Cologne finally approved the construction at the old location in Ersdorf.
According to plans by the Bonn architect Dr. Friedrich Carl Schubert, a neo-Gothic building with 400 seats in the form of a single-nave cruciform church with two small aisles was built between 1877 and 1879 . Deviating from the ground plan of the old church, the choir now faces NNE; the tower was not placed at the western end of the nave, but - unusually - next to the south aisle. The neo-Gothic interior was continuously supplemented in the following years according to plans by architect Lange (Cologne). The church was painted and got the four-colored windows and an organ. After two years of construction, the church has been used for worship since 1879 . As a result of the culture war in Prussia, it could not be consecrated solemnly until June 19, 1890 by Archbishop Philipp Krementz .
The church was extended to the west in 1956/57 and received a new organ stage. Most of the neo-Gothic interior and painting have been removed. The windows remained, however, and the window in the extension was added. From 1968 to 1971 another thorough renovation took place with the installation of a new heating system. The choir was adapted to the liturgical requirements of the 2nd Vatican Council . The lower part of the neo-Gothic high altar , created in 1878 by the sculptor Jägers in Cologne, was placed in the crossing as the main altar . In 1980/81 a priest's grave was laid out at the church and a weekday chapel was added behind the high choir. In all construction work, community members were involved to a large extent with "hand and tension services".

It has 20 registers with 1400 pipes on slider chests with mechanical play and electrical stop action . The individual works are housed in closed solid oak casings. Historical wayside shrines
In the localities of Altendorf and Ersdorf there are seven stone stations of the cross or “ Seven Footfalls ”, built between 1722 and 1731, 1924 and 2007, partly renewed in terracotta or bronze. On the church forecourt and the cemetery there are twelve and ten stone grave crosses , respectively , made between 1665 and 1769, which have been preserved from the former cemetery at the church.
In the field corridor there is a wooden pilgrimage cross from 1981 ("Langenfelder Kreuz" on the road to Gelsdorf, in the place of an older cross) and two stone votive crosses: the "Stone Cross" from 1746 (renovated in 2000 after vandalism) in the extension of the Unterdorfstrasse and the "Viethenkreuz" from 1814 on the street Am Viethenkreuz.
