Michael Höckel (* 1950 in Flörsheim ) is a German chemist , gynecologist and obstetrician .

Live and act

Michael Höckel first studied chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he obtained his diploma in 1973 and in 1978 he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. received his doctorate .
Also in Mainz , he completed a second degree of Medicine and received in 1980 the approval of a doctor .
At the University Women's Clinic in Mainz, he received training from 1980 to 1986 under Volker Friedberg as a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, and in 1982 he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD.
In 1985 Höckel completed a research stay at the Boston Children's Hospital and in 1986 at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School .
Back in Mainz in 1987 he was appointed senior physician at the university women's clinic and qualified as a professor in 1988 in the field of gynecology and obstetrics.
In 1990 he was visiting physician at the Department of Reconstructive Surgery at Emory Clinic , Atlanta , and in 1991 at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston . In 1993 Michael Höckel became Visiting Professor at the Cross Cancer Institute , Edmonton and at the Tom Baker Cancer Center , Calgary ( Canada ).
The University of Mainz appointed him extraordinary professor for gynecology and obstetrics in 1994 .
In the same year he became Visiting Professor at Princess Margaret Hospital and Bayview Cancer Center , Toronto (Canada), in 1995 at the Department of Gynecology at Yale University , New Haven , and at the Departments of Gynecology, Pathology and Radiation Oncology at Duke University , Durham , and in 1996 at Harvard Medical School , Boston, Bowman Gray Medical School, Wake Forest University , Winston-Salem , at the National Cancer Institute , Bethesda , and at the European Institute of Oncology , Milan ( Italy ).
In 1998 Michael Höckel was appointed to the chair of gynecology at the University of Leipzig and head of the Trier Institute .
Höckel scientifically investigated the oxygen supply of malignant tumors and their effects.
On the basis of developmental and embryonic studies, he developed a new oncological principle of radicality in the treatment of cervical and vulvar cancer . From this he developed the method of total mesometrial resection of the uterus (TMMR) for the treatment of cervical carcinoma, in which the tumor is removed within the limits of the morphogenetic unit of its origin. Anatomical structures that do not belong to this unit derived from the embryonic development can be preserved despite the spatial proximity to the tumor .
He developed the laterally extended endopelvic resection (LEER) method to treat relapses of cervical carcinoma.
In 2005, Höckel founded the Leipzig School of Radical Pelvic Surgery to convey the principle of locoregional tumor spread derived from embryonic development and its implementation in radical surgical methods for tumors of the female genitalia.
Michael Höckel headed the clinic for 15 years until his retirement in 2017. His successor was Bahriye Aktas on July 1, 2017 .
