Volker Friedberg (born July 5, 1921 in Stuttgart ; † March 2, 2014 ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

After graduating from high school , Friedberg studied medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . As an assistant and later senior physician , he then worked in Mainz until 1960 under the gynecologist and surgeon Richard Kräuter (1888–1951). 1960 Friedberg went as chief physician at the Municipal Women's Clinic Saarbrücken , which he headed until 1966th In that year he accepted a chair at the University of Mainz and was appointed director of the university women's clinic. From 1972 to 1974 Friedberg was President of the German Society for Gynecology and organized its congress in Wiesbaden in 1974 . The society later made him an honorary member . He was founding co-editor of the journal Der Gynäkologe . In 1989 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. In 1994 he received the Carl Kaufmann Medal .

The focus of Volker Friedberg's clinical work was surgical gynecology, which he continuously developed in the area of ​​the surgical treatment of cancer . Friedberg is considered the first university professor and clinic director in the Federal Republic of Germany to bring senology back into gynecology. His students include Lutwin Beck , Klaus Friese , Hermann Hepp , Michael Höckel , Rolf Kreienberg , Paul-Georg Knapstein , Eckhard Petri and Frank Melchert .
