Eckhard Petri

Eckhard Petri (born May 1, 1949 ; † September 21, 2019 in Schwerin ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

Life

Eckhard Petri studied medicine from 1967–1973 at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Ohio State University (1971). He then served as a doctor in a NATO unit in Mannheim . In 1975 he began training in urology under Rudolf Hohenfellner , but in 1975 he moved to Volker Friedberg's gynecological clinic , where he completed his training as a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. In 1974 he became a Dr. med. PhD . Also in Mainz habilitation he did in 1984. After his appointment as lecturer , he became chief physician at the Klinikum Idar-Oberstein , one academic teaching hospital of the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , where he led the women's clinic to 1992 and from 1989 also medical director was . In 1992 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Mainz . In July of the same year he moved to the Schwerin Clinic . In addition to his work as the head physician of the women's clinic, Petri was head of the interdisciplinary certified breast center, head of the tumor center with cancer registry, and founder and head of the interdisciplinary palliative care unit.

On January 1, 2011, he moved to the gynecological clinic of the University of Greifswald as head of the urogynecology department . In 2006 he received a professorship at Charles University in Prague . He was a medical member of the arbitration board for medical liability issues of the North German Medical Association. In addition to gynecological oncology and palliative medicine, Eckhard Petri devoted himself primarily to urogynecology. He already organized urogynecological conferences in Mainz , later in Idar-Oberstein and Schwerin . In 1976 he was a founding member of the International Urogynecologic Association (IUGA), its general secretary from 1982 to 1990 and its president from 1990 to 1992. He was a founding member of the American Urogynecological Society (AUGS) and was a member of the Society's Board of Directors from 1985 to 1990. In 1982 he was founding secretary, later chairman of the Urogynecology Working Group of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics , today's Working Group for Urogynecology and Plastic Pelvic Floor Reconstruction (AGUB). After an "incredibly short and serious illness", Petri died at the age of 70. The burial at sea took place in front of Warnemünde on September 23, 2019 .
