Michael Richard "Michel" Buck (born September 26, 1832 in Ertingen , Oberamt Riedlingen , † September 15, 1888 in Ehingen ) was a German physician , cultural historian and Swabian dialect poet .

Life

The eldest son of a wealthy farmer studied medicine in Tübingen from 1852 to 1857 and received his doctorate in 1857 under Carl von Siebold in Munich. In 1858 he passed his medical state examination in Tübingen. He then worked as a general practitioner in the Upper Swabian towns of Königseggwald , Hohentengen , Altshausen and Aulendorf . Most recently he was senior medical officer in Ehingen an der Donau , where he succumbed to his long-standing kidney disease in 1888 and was buried.

In addition to his work as a doctor, Buck dealt with folklore and linguistic research. His Upper German field name book quickly advanced to become a standard work for numerous local researchers and helped him to gain a high reputation. He also published a seminal text edition of the Richental Chronicle of the Council of  Constance in 1882 .

Along with the works of the Baroque poet Sebastian Sailer, his poems are considered to be the most important poems in Upper Swabian dialect.

Buck was a member of the Ulmia Tübingen regional team . In 1868 he was one of the founding members of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings .
