Michael Welling

Michael Welling (born August 12, 1971 in the Grafschaft Bentheim district ) is a German economist , university professor and football manager.

Life

Welling first began to study sport, sociology and literature at the University of Osnabrück , but dropped out after two semesters. He then studied economics at the Ruhr University in Bochum and at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow . The focus of his studies were marketing , controlling and environmental economics . In 1998 he graduated in Bochum with a degree in economics as the best of his year. His diploma thesis on the possibilities and limits of a business relationship-oriented contribution margin calculation was awarded the prize of the Ruhr University Bochum in 1998 for the “best student thesis”. During and after completing his studies, he worked in the Controlling & Strategic Planning department at adidas-Salomon AG in Herzogenaurach and Portland (USA).

From 1999 to 2004 he was a research assistant at the chair for applied business administration at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum with Peter Hammann with the fields of marketing and economic theory , marketing controlling , brand management as well as sports economics and sports management, then since July 2004 at the chair for medium-sized companies , start-ups and Entrepreneurship at the University of Bremen working for Jörg Freiling. In 2005 he was in Bochum with his dissertation Brand Economics; a contribution to theoretical pluralism in brand research (Deutscher Universitäts-Verlag, Wiesbaden 2006, ISBN 3-8350-0226-0 ) for Dr. rer. oec. PhD . He worked on strategic management projects with the international management consultancy McKinsey & Company, was a lecturer at the Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) in Iserlohn, where he helped to set up the sports and event management course. Until 2007 he was assistant to the board at VfL Bochum. From then on he worked in Hamburg in the field of sports management.

From October 2007 to September 2010 Welling worked for the international sports rights marketer Sportfive . Initially, he was responsible for brand management in the national area and later headed the Market & Sales Operations department of International Marketing as Senior Director Market & Sales. From October 2009 he was Vice President Acquisitions & Portfolio Management on the board of the newly founded Business Unit International, where he left in September 2010. In addition, Welling works as a lecturer at the Faculty of Sports Science at the Ruhr University Bochum (exp. 2009–2011), teaching the main subject “Sports Management” at the FOM. He works as a lecturer at the ESB (European Sponsoring Exchange) and is a regular speaker at conferences.

From October 1, 2010 to February 28, 2018, Welling was executive chairman of Rot-Weiss Essen . In September 2017 he asked the Rot-Weiss Essen Supervisory Board to terminate his contract, which ran until December 31, 2020. He was followed on November 1, 2017 by the former Bielefeld managing director Marcus Uhlig .

Since 1 July 2018 he is at 1. FSV Mainz 05 as & Director Marketing Sales operates.
