Mikhail Ivanovich Gorchakov ( Russian Михаил Иванович Горчаков * 1838 in the village Palkino, Ujesd Galich ; † June 5 . Jul / 18th June  1910 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a Russian Archpriest , a lawyer and university lecturer .

Life

Gorchakov, son of a deacon , graduated from the clerical school in Galitsch as the best and then attended the Kostroma clerical seminar . After graduating in 1857, he studied at the Spiritual Academy in Saint Petersburg . In 1861 Gortschakow completed his studies with a thesis on Friedrich Schleiermacher , with which he received his doctorate as a candidate in theology . He then taught at the Saint Petersburg Spiritual Academy.

In 1862 Gortschakow became a psalmist at the Russian Church in Stuttgart . He studied for three years at the University of Tübingen and attended lectures at universities in Germany, Switzerland and at the University of Strasbourg . After returning to St. Petersburg in 1865, he studied as a guest student at the law faculty of the University of St. Petersburg . He was also a law teacher at the St. Petersburg Marien Institute for Women, in whose church he was ordained a priest. He was in his work on the first 8 centuries of the Church to the end of 1865 Magister doctorate of theology. He received a silver medal for his work on the Edictum praetoris . In 1866 he completed his university studies with the examination to become a candidate for law and became a law teacher at the 2nd St. Petersburg Progymnasium (until 1869). After defending his dissertation on the monastery order 1649-1725, for which he received the Uvarow Prize, he received his doctorate in 1868 as a master of constitutional law. He then became a lecturer at the Chair of Canon Law at the University of St. Petersburg.

In 1870 Gorchakov was appointed a priest in Karlsbad . In 1871 he was awarded a doctorate in political science and appointed professor with his dissertation on the property of the All-Russian metropolitans , patriarchs and the Holy Synod 988–1738, for which he again received the Uvarov Prize . In 1879 his wife Yekaterina Mikhailovna died, so that he was now solely responsible for bringing up his five children aged one to five years.

In 1881 Gorchakov received his doctorate in theology from the Kiev Spiritual Academy with his dissertation on the mystery of marriage . He was then appointed archpriest. In the academic year 1882/1883 he was dean of the law faculty of the University of St. Petersburg. In 1883 he received the Uwarow Prize for the third time. In the canon law examination Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov awarded Gortschakow the highest grade. In 1893 he became an Honored Full Professor of the Chair of Canon Law at the University of St. Petersburg. During the university riots in 1899, he defended the students. In 1902 Gorchakov was elected a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences .

In 1905 Gorchakov was appointed head of the post office church of the Holy Twelve Apostles in St. Petersburg Postamtsstrasse. In the same year he became a member of the commission responsible for examining the questions submitted to the Council of Churches. In 1906 he became a member of the Council of Churches and the Holy Synod sent him to the state council of secular clergy .

Gorchakov was an honorary member of Dorpat University , the St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy (1899), the Kiev Spiritual Academy, the Russian Astronomical Society, the Academic Archive Commission of the Vladimir Governorate and an active member of the Imperial Free Economic Society of St. Petersburg .
