Mihail Kogălniceanu is a municipality in Romania in the Constanța district with about 10,000 (2007) inhabitants. It is located about 25 km northwest of the district capital Constanța .

history

Originally the place was called Karamurat and was inhabited by the Ottomans . The place name means something like "Murat the Black" and is based on a Tatar leader. Another old name is Bulgari . 1868 30 attracted Bessarabia German settler families from Bessarabia to and named the village after the Romanian King Ferdinand the First in Ferdinand I to. Even today the village is sometimes called Ferdinand . Karamurat was the largest Catholic village of the Dobruja Germans , who belonged to the most varied of denominations and lived an intensive community life. After the end of the Romanian monarchy, the place was given its current name in honor of the statesman Mihail Kogălniceanu .

Today Mihail Kogălniceanu is a large village. The Catholic Church is now being used and renovated by the remaining Italian residents of the village. The Mihail Kogălniceanu airport , which is also used by the military, is located in the area of ​​the village . The German residents, descendants of the Bessarabian Germans , were forcibly resettled with them to Wartheland and West Prussia in 1940, from where they were again expelled in 1945. According to the 2002 census, there are 10,114 inhabitants today, of which 8,155 Romanians , 1,214 Aromanians , 337 Tatars , 283 Roma , 107 Turks and 18 Germans .
