Mike Smith (born July 17, 1987 ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Smith began a professional career in 2011 in the German basketball league . After a season with the Eisbären Bremerhaven, Smith suspended the following season due to injury before joining the Belgian Ethias League in the 2013-14 season . After a season with Liège Basket, Smith played for league rivals Belfius Mons-Hainaut in the 2014/15 season.

Career

After graduating from high school in Vandalia (Missouri), Smith went to study at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City (Tennessee) , where he played for the Buccaneers college team from 2006 to 2011 in the Atlantic Sun Conference of the NCAA . In Smith's freshman season with the Buccaneers , it was enough to qualify for the National Invitation Tournament , which was eliminated in the first round. In 2009 he reached, among other things, together with the later Bundesliga player Courtney Pigram the runner-up in the championship tournament of the Atlantic Sun, but lost in the first round of the national NCAA final tournament against the Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh, who were number one in the regional group . The following season Smith had to sit out because of an injury as a redshirted , whereupon he completed his final senior season in the 2010/11 season, in which the Buccaneers did not take part in any major postseason tournament, although Smith himself was named "Player of the Year “of the Atlantic Sun. With almost 1,800 points in his college career, Smith is one of the ten best point collectors of all time among the Buccaneers .

After Smith had not been selected in the 2011 NBA draft by any club in the highest endowed professional league NBA , he signed his first professional contract with the Eisbären from Bremerhaven in the German basketball league . After a moderate start as a rookie , Smith received more game shares in the course of the season after injuries to teammates, but the polar bears missed the play-offs for the championship again in the basketball Bundesliga 2011/12 for the first time after two appearances in a row . Smith's contract was subsequently not renewed. After Smith was selected in the Entry Draft of the NBA Development League (D-League) by the Iowa Energy , he could not continue his career there after he had to sit out the entire 2012/13 season due to a wrist injury. Instead, Smith continued his career in Europe in the 2013-14 season, where he played in the Belgian Ethias League for the club from Liege . With this club, which had previously ended the two seasons on the penultimate place in the table, he made it into the final round for the championship title for the first time. For the 2014/15 season he was committed by the league competitor and former main round runner-up Belfius Mons-Hainaut.
