Mikel Dean
Mikel Dean (born September 19, 1954 in San Francisco , † February 18, 2008 in Mannheim ) was an American opera singer ( baritone ) who was particularly successful in the Italian subject.
Life
Dean studied singing at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester . He sang at the Stadttheater Gießen and was a member of the ensemble at the Stadttheater Pforzheim and from 1989 at the Theater Augsburg .
From 1995 until his death he was a member of the ensemble of the Nationaltheater Mannheim . There he sang the great roles of the Italian subject such as Rigoletto, Jago, Renato, but also Wagner roles such as Amfortas and Kurwenal, and quickly became a crowd favorite.
Dean made guest appearances at the opera houses in Bonn , Düsseldorf , Munich , Hamburg , Turin , Trieste and Nancy. He sang in concerts in the USA and Europe. At the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival he performed under the direction of Leonard Bernstein .
In 2008 Dean died at the age of 53 after a short, serious illness of the consequences of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease . The Mannheim director Regula Gerber characterized him in an obituary: "Outstanding and fascinatingly powerful he was not only as a singer and performer, but also as a colleague whose warmth and sunny disposition really gave you." Soloists, choir and orchestra took part in the opera house of the National Theater Farewell to Dean with a memorial event at which arias and choirs by Giuseppe Verdi could be heard.
