Miki Yamanaka

Miki Yamanaka ( Japanese 山 中 三 木 Yamanaka Miki ; * around 1990, in Kobe , Hyōgo prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( piano , organ , composition ) of modern jazz .

Miki Yamanaka, who comes from Kobe , started playing the piano at the age of five; When she played in the school big band in junior high school, she became interested in jazz. She moved to New York in 2012 to study English Language and Music. She had piano and music theory lessons with Jason Lindner , Jeb Patton , Fred Hersch and David Berkman , and organ with Sam Yahel and Larry Goldings . In 2015 she was given the opportunity to participate in the program of Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead , which included compositions and performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. In 2016 she graduated from Queens College , where she obtained a Masters in Music Performance and shortly thereafter received the Sir Roland Hanna Award as a pianist. In the course of her career so far, she has a. with Jerry Dodgion , Jonathan Blake , Rodney Green , Philip Harper , Winard Harper , Antonio Hart , Frank Lacy , David Wong , Andrea Brachfeld and Gerald Cannon .

She has also given concerts in well-known New York venues such as Smalls , Mezzrow, Fat Cat , Showman's and Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. She currently belongs to the Jason Brown Quintet, the Pete Zimmer Quintet, the Nick Finzer Quintet and the Lucas Pino Nonet. Recordings were made with Roxy Coss ( The Future Is Female , PosiTone, 2018). After the EP Songs Without Lyrics (2012) she released her own album Miki (Cellar Live Records) with her own compositions in 2018 , in which Steve Nelson , Orlando le Fleming and Bill Stewart were involved. It was positively recognized in the Down Beat .
