The Millennium Class is a series of four structurally identical Panamax cruise ships that were put into service for the American shipping company Celebrity Cruises between 2000 and 2002 . The ships were built at the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire .

The design of the Millennium class comes from the naval architect Jon Bannenberg; typical is the unusual color scheme and the angular shape of the rear. The ships were built in direct competition with the cruise ships of the Radiance class of the parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which are comparable in size and technology . and are characterized by luxurious furnishings, extensive glazing and a generous passenger ratio (approx. 45 GT / passenger). Most of the cabins are on the outside. The comparatively high speed of approx. 24 knots allows worldwide use even over long distances.

Machine system and drive

The type ship Celebrity Millennium was the first cruise ship in the world whose main machinery was equipped with gas turbines instead of diesel engines. The drive takes place via two azimuth thruster type Rolls-Royce "Mermaid" (dt. "Mermaid"), which were first installed in a cruise ship.

power supply

The special technical feature of the Millennium class is the complex turbo-electric machine system. The two gas turbines and a steam turbine are coupled with generators that supply the ships with electrical energy. This combination is also known as COGAS-electric (for "Combined Gas And Steam"). The reason for this design was the significantly lower pollutant emissions of the gas turbines compared to diesel engines. The General Electric LM2500 + gas turbines each generate a shaft output of 29.8 MW (approx. 40,500 WPS). These are so-called aero derivatives that were developed on the basis of the General Electric CF6 jet engine , which is also used for the Boeing 747 , among other things . The waste heat is used in exhaust gas steam generators to generate superheated steam , which, among other things, drives another steam turbine, which is also coupled to a generator. With this technology, the overall efficiency of the machine system can be increased significantly.

In order to reduce fuel consumption and high operating costs, a diesel generator set with an electrical output of 11.2 MW has been installed on board the ships since 2007. Its 16-cylinder diesel engine of the Wärtsilä 38 series can be operated with heavy fuel oil (MFO), while the gas turbines are dependent on the more expensive light marine diesel (MGO).

Propulsion and maneuvering aids

The ships of the Millennium class are propelled by two Rolls-Royce “Mermaid” propeller nacelles built into the stern, which can be rotated through 360 ° for steering and maneuvering. The forward-facing KaMeWa fixed propellers (so-called pull propellers ) are driven by Cegelec three-phase motors with an output of 19.5 MW each (approx. 26,520 hp) at a speed of up to 150 rpm. This type of drive ensures a comparatively low level of noise and vibration. Due to the propulsion technology, the ships manage without additional maneuvering aids in the stern. Three transverse thrusters are installed in the bow .

Technical problems

On board the four ships, however, there were repeated problems with the drive system, as a result of which cruises had to be broken off or canceled. The ship's two propeller gondolas had to be repaired several times during unscheduled stays in the dry dock . The legal disputes between the parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises and the manufacturer Rolls-Royce were only settled in early 2010 as part of a settlement. The shipping company received compensation of US $ 65 million.
