Celebrity Millennium

The Celebrity Millennium is a Panamax - cruise ship of the American shipping company Celebrity Cruises . The model ship of the series of the same name ( Millennium class ) was built around the year 2000 (" Millennium ") at the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire . It was the first cruise ship in the world whose main machinery was equipped with gas turbines instead of diesel engines. At the time of delivery, the Celebrity Millennium was the largest cruise ship built in France. Her sister ships are the Celebrity Infinity (2001), the Celebrity Summit (2001) and the Celebrity Constellation (2002).

history

Construction and commissioning

In May 1998 the American company General Electric announced that gas turbines were to be used on cruise ships for the first time. The first cruise ship that was equipped with this technology was the Millennium , with the hull number R31 to set keel was. The design of the ship comes from the Australian naval architect Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg & Rowell Design), who is particularly known for the design of yachts . The hull was originally dark blue and provided with gold-colored decorative stripes, while the superstructure was kept in white. Smaller areas of the chimney and mast were painted red. A few years later, however, the color scheme was simplified.

At the beginning of January 2000 the two propeller pods were installed. The Millennium was the first cruise ship to be equipped with a Rolls-Royce “Mermaid” drive system. The ship was actually supposed to be delivered on May 31, 2000, but due to technical problems the handover was delayed until the end of June, so that the maiden voyage had to be postponed. The ship was, by Robyn Roux, wife of the chef Michel Roux in Southampton on the name Millennium baptized. After all, the ship started its maiden voyage from Amsterdam on July 1, 2000, flying the Liberian flag, about two weeks late .

commitment

Immediately after commissioning, the Millennium carried out cruises in the Baltic Sea . It was then used worldwide, including in the Mediterranean , on the American east and west coast (with the passage of the Panama Canal ), the Caribbean and in the waters around Australia. In 2002 she moved under the flag of the Bahamas . In April 2008 the name was changed to Celebrity Millennium , at the same time the change to the Maltese shipping register took place. The home port has been Valletta since then . In the summer half of the year, the ship is on the move in Alaska and mainly starts from Vancouver and Seward . The ship is used in Asia between autumn and spring . Her travels begin mainly in Singapore , Hong Kong and Shanghai .

In May 2009 the Celebrity Millennium was renovated and overhauled in a Canadian shipyard for around US $ 10 million. At the beginning of January 2010, the shipping company announced extensive modernization measures under the catchphrase “Solstice it”, with which the equipment is to be adapted to the standard of the Solstice class.

Incidents

Problems with the propulsion system arose on board the Celebrity Millennium on the very first cruise . After that, damage occurred again and again, as a result of which cruises had to be broken off or canceled. The ship's two propeller gondolas had to be repaired several times during unscheduled stays in the dry dock . The legal disputes between the parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and the manufacturer Rolls-Royce were only settled in early 2010 as part of a settlement.

On July 2, 2007, a grounding occurred off Villefranche-sur-Mer , in which the propellers and electrical systems were severely damaged. The ship had to be repaired in dry dock, two cruises were canceled.

Trivia

The walnut panels in the Olympic restaurant come from the Olympic , the sister ship of the Titanic . The shipping company had previously acquired the parts as part of an auction at Sotheby’s auction house .
