Sea bird colonies on Moku Manu |
Moku Manu ( English Bird Island , German "Bird Island" ) is a small, uninhabited island in the Hawai'i archipelago . It is only about 1.3 kilometers off the east coast of the island of O'ahu , near the Mokapu Peninsula and part of the Honolulu County .
The island is about 410 m long, 210 m wide and has an area of 8.4 hectares (0.084 km²). It is of volcanic origin and rises steeply from the Pacific to a height of 62 meters above sea level. Because of the steep cliffs and strong currents, landing by boat is almost impossible.
Eleven different species of seabirds breed on Moku Manu, including rare ones such as the shearling ( Puffinus nativitatis ) or the bulwer's petrel ( Bulweria bulwerii ). The island is therefore, like many other small islands in Hawaii, a Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary ( bird sanctuary ) and may not be entered.
