Mokoliʻi (also Mokoli'i, Mokolii ), popularly also called Chinaman's Hat , is a small, uninhabited island in the Hawaiʻi archipelago and belongs to Honolulu County . It is only about 500 meters off the east coast of the island of Oahu , not far from the Kualoa Regional Park .
The island is of volcanic origin; it has an area of 4.7 ha (0.047 km²) and reaches a height of about 70 m above sea level.
The island was once a breeding area for the white-tailed tropical bird ( Phaethon lepturus ), today only one species of seabird, the wedge-tailed shearwater ( Puffinus pacificus , Hawaiian : Uau Kani ) breeds there . Mokoliʻi is, like many other small islands in Hawaii, a Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary ( bird sanctuary ). The island can be visited during the day and can be reached on foot at low tide .
