Kapapa Island is a flat, uninhabited island in the Hawaiian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . It is located in Kāneʻohe Bay about two kilometers off the east coast of the island of Oʻahu and administratively belongs to Honolulu County .
The maximum 5 m high island is around 250 m long, up to 75 m wide and has an area of 3.8 ha (0.038 km²). Since the island has an old Hawaiian place of worship, probably a Heiau , it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Kapapa Island Complex and Historic District . The island was also a breeding area of various sea birds such as the Bulwersturmvogels , however, was to remain open to the public, not to a Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary ( bird sanctuary proclaimed). Rare sea bird species have therefore no longer been identified. Not far from Kapapa Island are other small but protected islands such as Mokoliʻi or Kekepa .
