Christy is preparing for the first day of her law degree. Bonnie tries to encourage her because she is proud of what her daughter has achieved. But soon Christy begins to doubt. Because the double burden of job and school is difficult for her, especially since her new boss in the restaurant assigns her an additional shift. Then she forgets her seminar documents in the restaurant and has to go to university unprepared the next day. She decides to quit her studies, but at the meeting with Alcoholics Anonymous she realizes that she has already achieved so much and therefore there is no reason not to overcome this challenge.

Bonnie prepares for her wedding to Adam, who does not want to support her. That night Bonnie begins to dream that Adam is having a relationship with the supermarket clerk Louise, which completely confuses her. Adam makes fun of it when she tells him, and only when Marjorie makes it clear to her that it has to do with the fact that she subconsciously wants Adam to help her plan the wedding, she can deal with it and turn him around To say "help.

Christy believes she no longer needs the Gamblers Anonymous sessions because she believes she has her gambling addiction under control. Still, Nora advises her to look for a supervisor. That's how she met Ned, who advised her to play in a controlled manner. This is the only way she can find out if she knows when to stop. Christy therefore buys 10 scratch cards with the aim of scratching only three, which she manages without any problems. But when she receives a check from the university with a refund, she can no longer hold back and wants to go to the casino. Since she cannot reach Ned, she calls her mother and asks her for help. Now she realizes that she is addicted to gambling, but only when she has an abundance of money.

Bonnie missed the appointment to drive blind Mr. Munson to the hospital for treatment. On the return trip, he therefore demands that he be allowed to drive the car himself once as a reparation.

Christy is afraid of her new professor at the university ( Constance Zimmer ), because she is always being beaten by her. Not having time to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, she decides to attend a meeting at the university. She is amazed to find that her professor is there too. It turns out she was a drinker herself until six months ago. But she finds the meeting useless and invites Christy over for coffee because she needs someone to talk to. Christy benefits from this in class, but does not feel comfortable in the role of the listener to her problems outside of school. She therefore recommends that she continue to attend meetings, which she refuses. This also has an impact on their future relationships with one another.

Bonnie and Adam discuss how they want to organize their wedding reception. When Bonnie then finds a suitable location without consulting him, she feels guilty about it. Jill suggests that she pretend it was Adam's idea, and Bonnie shows him bad places because of it. Underneath is a cellar in which wine barrels used to be made. Bonnie gets Adam to choose her location. But afterwards he buys the cellar because he immediately fell in love with the place and wants to open a bar there. Now Bonnie feels betrayed because he has not discussed it with her.

Bonnie visits Tammy in prison and learns that she is about to be paroled. Since she would have to go to the transition home, Bonnie offers her to live with her first. Back from the visit, she tells Christy, who of course feels left out because she hasn't asked her beforehand. Christy agrees on the condition that Bonnie is responsible for Tammy. So Tammy moves in with them and Bonnie quickly feels overwhelmed with the situation. Since Tammy also suffers from night terrors, Bonnie wants to spend the next night with Adam and tries to steal from the house. But Christy forbids her. Now Bonnie tries to hide from Tammy in the laundry room, but Tammy finds her. Tammy wants to know what she's doing, she tells her she needs to fix the washing machine. Bonnie notices that Tammy knows something about house maintenance and repairs. So she lets Tammy do the work for herself and has some peace from her.

Bonnie wanted to surprise Christy and got tickets for the musical Wicked in San Francisco , but Adam doesn't want to come. So the two of them decide who to ask. Ultimately, she chose Marjorie because she deserved a little change. Because since her husband Victor had a stroke, she has been taking care of him around the clock.

During the break in the performance, Marjorie received a call that Victor had suffered another stroke. They'll return immediately, but he didn't survive. The next time Marjorie comes to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, Christy wonders why she's not sad. It is the same after the abdication. When asked what she wants to do with the urn, Marjorie explains that she would like to scatter Victor's ashes in the park where he proposed to her. So they go there together, but the park no longer exists, it had to give way to a supermarket. On the drive back home, they finally find out why Marjorie cannot mourn. She only felt relief when she received the news of death. Wendy explains that this often happens when people are terminally ill in the hospital for a long time. You can then start saying goodbye beforehand. Back home, Marjorie takes Victor's favorite cat on her lap and begins to cry softly.

Since Christy gambled away Jill's money on Bonnie's bail, she has had to repay it in monthly installments. Because Tammy discovered water damage behind a cupboard in the apartment, she is now renovating and making a lot of noise, so Christy goes to Jill to study in peace. Jill asks her that the 1st and the next installment is due today. Christy doesn't have the money yet and asks her to stay until after work. When she comes back and gives Jill the money, Jill immediately gives it to her housekeeper as she has no pockets in her expensive swimsuit. Christy is very upset about this because she has the feeling that Jill doesn't know how much hassle it is for her to save so much money. Jill just wants to help her learn how to handle money properly. After talking to her supervisor at a Players Anonymous meeting, Christy understands this too and apologizes to Jill.

After Bonnie and Adam were in the cinema, they pass a tattoo studio, where they are molested by two young people because of their age. Bonnie, feeling hurt in her pride, suggests Adam that they get each other's names tattooed. But Adam gets scared and stops after the first two letters. Then he tries to sell Bonnie so that he always calls her 'Bo'. Bonnie, on the other hand, becomes addicted to more tattoos and only lets herself be braked when Marjorie speaks to her conscience.

Jill wants to clear out her closet at home and invites Christy and Wendy to help her. They can also choose things that Jill no longer wants. When certain items of clothing appear that Jill has memories of, she becomes gloomy and finds that she has achieved nothing in her previous life. She wants to take Christy and Wendy out for dinner after their work is done, but they both have to go to work. Jill can't understand, especially since it's Saturday night. Christy suggests that she look for a job herself so that she feels busy. But she doesn't know what suits her and she hasn't learned anything. When they then hand over the sorted clothes to the welfare department, Jill spontaneously agrees to help distribute the clothes to the people.

Because Marjorie has felt lonely since Victor died, Bonnie invites her over. Marjorie brings a puzzle, but Bonnie doesn't find it particularly interesting at first. But Tammy and Marjorie are very excited about it. When Bonnie can finally put the first pieces together, she thinks it's great too. Since Marjorie gets along very well with Tammy, Bonnie suggests that Tammy move in with her so that she is no longer so lonely. So Marjorie is helped and she and Christy are rid of Tammy.

Christy learns with her fellow student Stacy when Bonnie comes home and acts impossibly, which leads Christy to introduce her as the worst mother ever. But Stacy points out that there is a podcast where someone talks about their really terrible mother. Christy doesn’t let this rest and when she listens to an episode, she realizes that this is her daughter Violet. She is shocked and tries to contact her, but since Violet has a new number, Bonnie has to help her. Since she doesn't know where she lives either, she brings Bonnie to her. She wants Violet to do another podcast in which she explains that her mother is no longer like this today. But Violet thinks Christy should explain this herself and record it. In the end Violet is grateful that Christy apologizes to her for not being a good mother, but she still doesn't want anything to do with her because she stole her childhood.

The opening of Adams Bar is imminent, Bonnie is mad at him because Tammy is now helping him and she has to do the work in the house herself again. Adam begins to doubt whether what he is doing is right, and he is drunk because he has tested different beers. Bonnie supports him and begins to distribute flyers for the opening to her friends and acquaintances. It will be a complete success except for the fact that practically no one drinks beer at the opening because almost all of the guests are Alcoholics Anonymous, which leads Adam to say he feels like he has a juice bar.

Tammy has a toothache and has to go to the dentist. Since Marjorie is traveling to Canada for a meeting, Bonnie agrees to accompany Tammy. After that, she worries that Tammy is taking too many of the pain relievers at once and makes sure that she keeps to the dosage. But Tammy finds out she can take a pill every four hours, even though Bonnie only gives her one every six hours. Bonnie explains to her that she is doing this for her protection and because she wants to help her. Afterward, Bonnie proudly states that she was in control of herself too, as she would have had free access to pain medication and not taken any.

Christy would have the opportunity to do an internship in a law firm with one of her lecturers during the summer vacation, if she can do it. She has to conduct a show trial as a public prosecutor against her fellow student Lisa. It's about a drug dealer who denies having anything to do with it. She struggles to prepare for it, but Bonnie gives her the crucial tip on how to do it safely: Christy just has to remember how her mother did her drug deals and so she knows how to tackle the defendant. Eventually she wins and because of her skills and knowledge she gets a paid job at the law firm over the summer.

Christy is quite stressed at work in the restaurant and takes a break outside, where she meets Chef Rudy smoking a cigarette. She lets him seduce her to smoke one too, as this is supposed to calm down. A short time later, at a meeting, she buzzes another cigarette from someone, but smokes it in hiding when she hears her friends come outside. Then, after a long time, she buys another pack of cigarettes and is amazed at how expensive they have become. Bonnie finds out that she has started smoking again, but Marjorie consoles her that this is not a problem.

Tammy met a man at the hardware store who invited her on a date. She is totally nervous and doesn't know how to act. Everyone tries to give her good advice and she is torn between whom to believe. Especially when he doesn't get in touch with her after the date.
