Momoland ( Korean 모모 랜드 ; stylized spelling MOMOLAND ) is a South Korean girl group that was founded in 2016 by Duble Kick Company (renamed MLD Entertainment in May 2018). The members of the group were determined in the casting show "Finding Momoland", which was broadcast from July to September 2016 on the South Korean television channel Mnet . Momoland officially debuted on November 10, 2016 with the mini-album Welcome to Momoland and the single JJan! Koong! Kwang! ( 짠 쿵쾅 ) . The group's official fan club name is "Merry-G0-Round".
history
Finding Momoland
From July 22nd to September 16th, 2016, Mnet broadcast the casting show "Finding Momoland". In ten episodes seven members were to be found for the new girl group Momoland from Duble Kick Company. The concept of the show was similar to that of the casting show "Sixteen", also broadcast by Mnet, from which the group Twice emerged . The ten trainees had to practice and perform songs and choreographies every week to demonstrate their skills. Sometimes they were divided into teams or had to compete against each other individually.
At the end of the show, Ahin, Nayun, Nancy, Hyebin, JooE, Jane and Yeonwoo prevailed and became members of Momoland.
2016–2017: Debut with Welcome to Momoland and new members
After the end of “Finding Momoland”, the relatively unknown group had one last task to perform in order to debut: they should find 3000 viewers to perform in front of them and perform two songs from their debut album. In the end, 2,300 people gathered to see Momoland; the set mark was not reached and Duble Kick Company postponed the debut until further notice. The group then continued to train for their debut and performed at festivals and schools to further increase their profile.
On October 20, 2016, Duble Kick Company announced that Momoland would release their debut album in November after exceeding the set target on Makestar's crowdfunding page.
On November 10th, Momoland officially debuted with the mini-album Welcome to Momoland and the single JJan! Koong! Kwang! ( 짠 쿵쾅 ) .
On March 28, 2017, Duble Kick Company announced that Daisy was joining the group as a new member. In 2016 Daisy also took part in “Finding Momoland”. Before joining Duble Kick Company, she was a trainee at JYP Entertainment and almost became a participant on the TV show "Sixteen". A few days later, Taeha was confirmed as the ninth member of Momoland. Taeha became known in the TV show "Produce 101", from which the temporary girl group IOI emerged. At that time, however, she was still under contract with Starship Entertainment.
The single Wonderful Love ( ful Love 해 ) was released on April 25th . Wonderful Love was also released as an EDM version as a digital single on June 16 .
On August 22nd, Momoland released their second mini-album Freeze! together with the single of the same name.
Nancy became a member of the “Sunny Girls” project group in November. Together with Cheng Xiao of the Cosmic Girls, Eunha ( GFriend ), YooA ( Oh My Girl ) and Nayoung ( Gugudan ), she released the single Taxi for the "Music Crush" project of the music show Inkigayo on November 27th .
2018: Great! , Japan debut and Fun to the World
On January 3, 2018, Momoland's third mini-album Great! together with the single Bboom Bboom ( 뿜뿜 ). With Bboom Bboom , the group was able to achieve victories at music shows for the first time and made it to number 1 seven times.
On February 28, Momoland's first album was released in Japan with the title MOMOLAND The Best . It contains the Korean singles as well as several other tracks released in South Korea. A few days later, the group announced at an event in Tokyo that they were currently planning their official debut in Japan. On May 23, it was announced that Momoland will be releasing new music in South Korea on June 26. On June 13, 2018, the group officially debuted in Japan with the Japanese version of Bboom Bboom. They were expected by 7000 fans at the debut event at LAZONA Kawazaki Plaza in Kawazaki , Japan.
On June 6, a schedule for the release of the mini-album Fun to The World was released . On the following days, the first teaser photos, teaser videos for the single BAAM and a highlight medley of the new mini-album appeared. Fun to the World was released on June 26th along with the single BAAM . On June 1, MLD Entertainment announced that Nayun suffered from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and would not be participating in any group activities to seek medical treatment until further notice. Since October 3rd she has been performing again with the group.
Bboom Bboom was awarded platinum by the Korea Music Content Industry Association on August 9th for 100,000,000 streams. Momoland was the first girl group to receive this award.
2019: Show Me , Taehas and Yeonwoo's exit
On March 20, 2019 Momoland released their fifth mini-album Show Me along with the single I'm So Hot. Prior to the release it was announced that Taeha and Daisy will not be part of this comeback for health and personal reasons . In August 2019, MLD Entertainment announced that Yeonwoo would no longer keep appointments with the group until further notice due to a panic disorder .
On November 29, 2019, MLD Entertainment announced Taeha's and Yeonwoo's exit from the group. Yeonwoo decided to stay with the agency and work on her acting career. Taeha's contract with MLD Entertainment was triggered. It was also said that negotiations with Daisy were still ongoing about staying in the group.
On December 30th, Momoland released the single album Thumbs Up .
Controversy
Allegations of plagiarism
On January 12, the Russian girl group accused Serebro Momoland via Twitter that BBoom Bboom a plagiarism of her song Mi Mi Mi is. A spokesman for the producer duo Shinsadong Tiger and Beomi Nangi, from whose pen Bboom Bboom comes, said that the intro of the song sounds familiar due to similarities in the genre and the guitar riffs, but the melody and sound sequence are completely different from Mi. Wed Wed be.
Manipulation through bulk purchases
In February 2018, Duble Kick Company was accused of mass buying Momoland's mini-album Great! Wanting to gain advantages in the charts and the music shows. The album would have sold around 5000 copies in January 2018 and suddenly more than 8000 copies were sold in a single day in February. Duble Kick Company said that on the one hand they didn't have the financial means to make such purchases and on the other hand they had tried to find out what the reason for the high sales figures was. So it was concluded that international fans, especially in Japan, are probably responsible for the purchases. Following the announcement of an official Momoland debut and the release of a best-of album on February 28 in Japan, Bboom Bboom would do well in some Japanese charts. This would have resulted in high purchases.
Those responsible for the Hanteo Charts in South Korea also tried to investigate the case, as sales in stores that are licensed by Hanteo directly affect their charts. So they asked the store, in which more than 90% of Momoland's album sales were made, to provide relevant documents in order to refute the allegations. Since the matter could not be completely resolved even with these documents, Hanteo announced on February 22 that they would refer the case to the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for further investigation. They want clarity on this matter in order to avoid negative influences on the entire South Korean music industry.
On May 9, it was announced that the ministry had sent Hanteo the results of the first investigation, which stated that no irregularities had been found. Hanteo then asked for further documents and investigations because they were not satisfied with the results. The results of the second investigation were published on June 25th. MLD Entertainment and Momoland were acquitted of all allegations. The cause of the controversy was Mihwadang Record, who reported the sales of the total of 8,261 pre-orders sent to Hanteo in one day, which explains the large difference to the previous sales. Mihwadang Record posted a statement on its official page at Cafe Daum and apologized for the inconvenience.
