Moritz Stahl (born August 7, 1991 in Augsburg ) is a German jazz saxophonist .

Live and act

Stahl came into contact with music as a small child; he learned the saxophone early. At the age of 16 he became a member of the Bavarian Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Harald Rüschenbaum . In 2011 he began studying instruments with Florian Trübsbach at the Munich University of Music and Theater . In addition to his studies, he took private lessons with Seamus Blake , Peter Less and Paul Heller . In 2014 and 2015 he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jiggs Whigham and Niels Klein . Since October 2018 he has been studying composition with Christian Elsässer and Gregor Hübner .

Stahl worked with musicians such as John Hollenbeck , Aaron Parks , Tim Hagans , Dusko Goykovich , Joe Gallardo , Alan Broadbent , Henning Sieverts , Manfred Schoof , Tia Fuller and Richie Beirach . He is one of the founders of the electronic-jazz collective's Ark Noir. He is also a member of the Jazzrausch Big Band and first tenor saxophonist of the Bamesreiter Schwartz Orchestra ; he has toured the USA, China, Russia, Ecuador, Portugal, Sicily, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Austria and Switzerland.

With the joint band project Ark Noir (with Tilman Brandl, Marco Dufner, Sam Hylton and Robin Jermer) he released his debut album Tunnel Visions in 2019, which was positively received by critics and audiences (the album received 4 out of 5 stars in Rolling Stone ).

Prizes and awards

Stahl received the Kurt Maas Jazz Award in 2017 with a scholarship for a summer stay at Berklee College of Music . In the same year he was awarded the Bavarian Art Prize in the music and dance category.
