Yellow Muscat grape

Gelber Muskateller , French Muscat à petits grains blancs , is a very old and high-quality white wine that is widespread worldwide - grape variety with an intense, complex muscat bouquet .

distribution

In 2010 the worldwide cultivation area of the variety was 31,183 hectares.

In warmer or hot regions such as Italy , France (7,671 ha, as of 2010), Spain , Portugal (for example the Moscatel de Setúbal ), Hungary , Bulgaria , Algeria , Argentina and Chile , it produces excellent noble sweet nutmeg wines or spicy dessert wines . It is one of the grapes used to make the famous Tokaj wine. In South Africa it is an important part of the Constantia .

In Austria , the area under cultivation was 863.84 hectares in 2019, which is 1.9% of the country's total wine-growing area. Towards the end of the last century and to this day, the variety is increasingly being planted. It is of increasing importance on the Austrian wine market. In the period from 1999 to 2009, the area increased from 143 to 527 hectares, that is 268%.

In Germany , it is not so widespread because it is sensitive to winter frost with a tendency to trickle , ripens medium-late and is susceptible to botrytis (planted vineyards approx. 190 ha, as of 2010). In bad years the acidity can be hard and the bouquet can be dominant. In such cases, the wine is ideal for blending with Riesling , Silvaner or Pinot Blanc . The same applies to Switzerland , where 49.4 hectares of vineyards were surveyed (as of 2010). In the Swiss canton of Valais , Muscat is considered a traditional white grape variety.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly woolly hairy with a slightly reddish-bronze tinge. The bronze-colored young leaves are slightly hairy and shiny.
  • The medium-sized, thick leaves are rounded (usually longer than wide), five-lobed and clearly indented. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is slightly blistered.
  • The cylindrical grape is hardly shouldered, large, long and medium-sized with dense berries. The round to slightly elongated berries are medium-sized and green-yellow in color. The skin of the berry is thick. The aroma of the juicy berry is fine and has an aromatic bouquet with a pronounced nutmeg taste.

Maturation: late - if the wine is not sufficiently mature, the wines contain little extract, are thin and have a strong acidity.

Claims, properties

The variety has low soil requirements; light to medium-heavy soils with a low lime content are preferred. But it requires warm, airy layers. The yields are medium high but are uncertain because of the sensitivity to flowering. Is very susceptible to oidium and botrytis . The berries pop up easily, especially in damp autumn weather - berry rot.

Wine

The yellow muscatel can be used to vinify white wines with spicy aromas and the typical intense muscat tone. The wines (including sparkling wines) can be made dry or sweet. When the berries are very ripe and have a high sugar content, the variety is also ideal for making sweet wines. In unfavorable years, the yellow muscatel is less suitable for single-variety expansion, as the wines become thin and low in extract. Such wines can, as blending partners, support other types such as Pinot Blanc and Riesling very well.
