Moshe Feiglin (2003)

Moshe Zalman Feiglin ( Hebrew משה פייגלין; * July 31, 1962 in Haifa ) is an Israeli politician. As a member of the Likud, he was deputy spokesman for the 19th Knesset . Feiglin was one of the central actors in the protests against the Oslo peace agreement ; In 1993, together with Schmuel Sackett , he founded the So Arzenu ( Hebrew זו ארצנו; “This [is] our country”). In March 2015 he founded the Zehut party .

biography

The Feiglins immigrated to Palestine from the Russian Empire as part of the 1st Aliyah . They founded Zionist settlements in the north: Mishmar Hayarden, Hadera , Kinneret. Feiglin's grandfather Abraham was the first Jewish child born in Metullah .

Moshe Feiglin grew up in Rehovot in the 1960s . After four years of military service, during which he served with the pioneers and was quickly promoted to officer, he initially worked as a businessman and founded a window cleaning company for high-rise buildings and then an IT start-up that dealt with security systems. He moved to the settlement of Karnei Shomron in the West Bank with his wife Tzipi from the USA. Feiglin has five children and nine grandchildren.

Political career

Protest against the Oslo peace process

In 1993 Feiglin was one of the founders of the So Arzenu protest movement, which opposed the Oslo peace process and the government of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin . The movement relies on blockades at intersections and other forms of civil disobedience as a form of protest. In 1997 he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for incitement to riot for activity within the movement, but the sentence was later converted into community service.

Feiglin in Likud

Feiglin led the Manhigut-Jehudit -action within the Likud, which advocates “authentic Jewish values” and a closer reference to the Orthodox Judaism .

In December 2005, Feiglin ran as one of seven candidates for the Likud presidency and received 12.5% of the vote. He achieved third place after Benjamin Netanyahu and Silvan Shalom . In the same election he ran for nomination on a list for the Knesset elections, but met with a strong rejection from Netanyahu, who postponed the nomination votes for the Knesset election list and pushed through changes to the party statutes to prevent “someone from being a Likud candidate who has received more than three months' imprisonment ”. This would have excluded Feiglin, who was convicted of civil disobedience in the 1990s, from being nominated for the Knesset or any other candidacy for Likud leadership positions. Feiglin withdrew his candidacy for the Knesset on January 3, 2006, following a statement by the Likud electoral committee that, in line with previous decisions by the Israeli highest court, Feiglin was not convicted for "dishonorable" violations of the law, leading to later candidacies for Likud- Party offices or lists would remain open.

In fact, Feiglin ran again in the internal party primaries for party chairmanship on August 14, 2007, nearly doubling his previous result by hitting 23.4 percent versus 72.8 percent for Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu feared a strong result for Feiglin and tried to expel him from the party before the primaries. Netanyahu said he would keep trying.

In the internal party election for the nomination of Likud candidates on December 8, 2008 for the Knesset elections in February 2009 , Feiglin reached number 20 on the list. However, he was later downgraded to position 36. Since the Likud only received 27 Knesset seats, Feiglin was unable to get into parliament.

Feiglin ran again in January 2012 against Benjamin Netanyahu for the chairmanship of the Likud; he again received 23% of the vote.

In the 2013 Knesset election , Feiglin made it into the Knesset in 13th place. He was elected Deputy Speaker of the 19th Knesset.

After he was only placed in 36th place on the list in the run-up to the 2015 Knesset election , he left Likud in January 2015 and announced the establishment of his own party.

Toe hat

Feiglin founded the libertarian nationalist party Zehut in March 2015 . After this narrowly failed the Knesset's 3.25% hurdle in the parliamentary elections in Israel in April 2019 , there was long speculation as to whether Zehut would run again in the subsequent parliamentary elections in Israel in September 2019 , as an unnecessary division of votes in the right Camp was feared. Ultimately, Feiglin was able to reach an agreement with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu . Zehut withdrew from voting, while Feiglin was promised a ministerial post in a potential renewed government of Netanyahu.

Political opinions

Feiglin is convinced that the land of Israel belongs exclusively to the Jewish people, since it was given to the Jews by God, and does not recognize the existence of a Palestinian people. He also said in this context that the Arabs did not live in the desert, but created it. He continued to accuse the Arabs of behaving like Amalek . Arabs in Israel should never be the bearers of civil rights, but at most human rights. Feiglin also suggested that Israel leave the UN and completely cut off the Palestinians' access to their own water sources.

After these and similar statements, the British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith Feiglin announced that he had been banned from entering Great Britain because Feiglin had "incited serious crimes and incited hatred". His presence would “not serve the public good”.

In 2004 he said in an interview: "You cannot teach a monkey to speak, and you cannot teach an Arab to democracy."

Feiglin stayed away from the speech given in German by EU Parliament President Martin Schulz in the Israeli Knesset on February 12, 2014 . He wrote on Facebook: "I will be absent during the speech because it is inappropriate for a speech to be given in the Parliament of the Jewish State in the language in which our parents were pushed into the railroad cars and the crematoria."

On July 24, 2014, Feiglin wrote on Facebook: "A hair on the head of an Israeli soldier is more precious than the entire population of Gaza that Hamas has elected [...]"

In a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on August 1, 2014, in the context of the Gaza War (2014) , Feiglin called for the extensive expulsion of the Arab population from the Gaza Strip , the complete military destruction of the entire area of Gaza and Hamas and the conversion from Gaza to Israeli territory ( annexation ): “The immediate enemy is Hamas. (Not the tunnels, not the rockets, but Hamas.) ”His plan envisages“ the conquest of the entire Gaza Strip and the annihilation of all fighters and their supporters ”. He also explains how " to turn Gaza into Jaffa ", "a thriving Israeli city with as few enemy civilians as possible". To this end, the Israeli army must find suitable places for "tent camps" for the Palestinians on the border with Sinai , "until appropriate destinations for emigration have been found". Palestinians who nevertheless decided to remain in Gaza would have to declare their loyalty to Israel and receive "a blue ID card similar to that of the Arabs of East Jerusalem" . In an interview with CNN Feiglin defended his proposals: "This is a war between good and evil, between light and darkness."

Feiglin claims to stand for “loyalty to the God of Israel” as well as for “authentic Jewish leadership” and to stand up for “authentic Jewish values” and “authentic and free Jewish identity”. He is also committed to “family values”. He has long campaigned to give Jews free access to the Temple Mount and to extend Israeli control over the hill. He questions the legitimacy of the Waqf , the Islamic authority that administers the holy sites on the Temple Mount. In addition, Feiglin is committed to the immediate erection of the Third Jerusalem Temple on the Temple Mount.
