The Motorway M-1 is a six-lane highway in Pakistan that connects the cities of Peshawar and Islamabad in the north of the country and runs almost parallel to the N-5 national road between these two cities. It is administered by the National Highway Authority .

construction

Construction of the M-1 began in 1997 after the M-2 opened between Islamabad and Lahore . A new connection between the metropolises of Peshawar and Islamabad had become necessary because the traffic had increased rapidly and the N-5 was no longer sufficient. The first section was opened by President Musharraf in 2004 ; the last section was opened to traffic on October 30, 2007. The M-1 was built with three lanes in both directions from the start.

course

The M-1 runs from Peshawar over a distance of 175 km in an easterly and south-easterly direction and ends at a motorway junction with the M-2; from there there is a connection to Islamabad.

The following major cities are on the M-1 motorway:

Facilities

It is planned to build ten filling stations on the M-1, five of them in both directions. Three of them are said to be on each side of the bridges over the Kabul , Indus and Bara rivers . Two petrol stations are already in operation at both ends of the motorway.

toll

The motorway is subject to toll in a closed toll system with cards. There is a toll station on the highway near Peshawar. Further toll stations are integrated in the connection points. The toll for the M-1 is continued on the M-2 to Islamabad, there is no toll station at the end of the M-1 in Islamabad.

The toll for the entire route is 85 PKR (as of April 2010).
